5.0 out of 5 stars YES, WE CAN... CAN.... be YOUNG @ HEART!!! 26 Jan 2009
By Kiki
Format:DVD
I saw this film in our local cinema in France and the audience was giving the film a standing ovation! One of the most touching, beautiful, sad and uplifting films I've ever seen.
We both, my Hero Husband and myself, are singing in choirs, are playing instruments and thus tremendously enjoyed this unexpected gift by Stephen Walker and the incredibly 'fine tuned' Bob Cilman.
Should you only watch one film in a very long time, please go and watch this! You will not regret it! Can't wait for the DVD to come out; I would recommend it to everybody who is occasionally feeling blue, feels old or left aside.... it restores your spirit in minutes and deepens your laughter lines! It's a WOW - SMILE film with a deeper message: If you have the right attitude, you CAN ....

Having just seen the film here in France twice, the only thing stopping me from going a third time is that I shall buy the DVD when it becomes available in March 2009. Wonderful subject matter, the joy brought to themselves and others by a choir of 73- to 92-year-olds, along with inevitable sadnesses given their ages; the talent of the charismatic young (53) musical director, Bob Cilman, who has the choir - and me - actually enjoying rock, punk and heavy metal; and the sensitive and moving film direction of Stephen Walker. I'm too young to join them myself (63), and for the moment I'm still busy conducting a choir of my own (average age 60), but sadly when I qualify by age, no doubt Bob Cilman will have given up himself - he founded the group some 25 years ago - otherwise I'd be considering emigrating again !

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving 23 Sep 2008
Format:DVD
Utterly brilliant. I first saw it when it aired on UK TV two years ago and have been hoping for a DVD release ever since.
The best documentary I've ever seen, by turns funny, poignant but ultimately so uplifting and life-affirming. The prison concert was particularly moving.
I'll never look at elderly people in quite the same way from now on. Superb!

5.0 out of 5 stars Young @ Heart 19 Sep 2008
Format:DVD
Young @ Heart is the all time great, feel good movie about senior citizens who are members of a choral group. This is a well thought-out documentary about people who are living life to its fullest and enjoying every minute of it. They have a purpose. They share their understanding of the realities of aging and illness, and discuss their opinions confidently, openly and with much good humor.

We get to meet and spend time with delightful people, and can identify with some of their insecurities as they prepare for a major concert. We share their concerns about the members who are battling illnesses, and they continue to learn words and music for songs totally unfamiliar, like James Brown's "I Feel Good" or "Schizophrenia" by Sonic Youth. They work diligently at their art, recognizing their limitations without losing their spirit or enthusiasm. They recognize the commitment and resolutely take on the responsibility that the show must go on, even when they're not always "feeling good."

There are lots of laughs and many touching moments. I left the theater with a smile. In a short time, I got to know this positive, lively bunch, and they were a part of my life. I shared in their joys and triumphs, shared in their down times, and was well rewarded with a stimulating and successful performance! A wonderful goup role model, made up of real people!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life is too short.... 27 Jan 2013
Format:DVD
Saw the film on TV in Germany and loved it - recommended that my Mother in law should look out for it on TV in the UK - but have now decided to order it for her on DVD as life is too short to wait for films to be shown on TV!

By C. Swain TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
A documentary following the lives of a group of senior citizens (with an average age of 80) who are brought together to form a choir in Massachusetts to perform at a hometown concert. Under the stewardship of Choirmaster Bob Cilman (he deserves a medal of honour), the oldies (bloody hell..... not that much older than me!!!) are put through their paces on songs by Coldplay, Hendrix, James Brown, Sonic Youth etc. We see glimpses of their homelives and they are wonderfully open and honest in interview. Some absolutely hilarious moments, punctuated by tragedy.
The performance at the prison will leave you dumbstruck and emotional.
A film that will stay with you forever, guaranteed. When life feels like crap, just put this on. You will be inspired.
Wonderful.

You would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by this documentary. Very few things live up to the label of 'life affirming' but this really does.

Not only did mans journey into space peak between 1969 and 1972 during which the 12 (only what ? 8 left alive) men who walked on the moon did their stuff : music also peaked during those years. The rest is just winding down and fiddling about. 13 7 hours ago
