In preparation of our growing family, my husband and I have been trying to track down our favorite books growing up. I was thrilled to find two of my favorites - "Young Guinevere" and "Rosie and the Rustlers" available on Amazon. Both of these books have strong female characters that provide solid role models for young girls, as well as allowing them to use their imaginations to provide back-stories to the beautiful illustrations.
Young Guinevere's illustrations in particular have stayed with me throughout my life, as has the wonderful twist on the traditional Arthurian legend. In this book, instead of being a love-sick girl whose main skills are embroidery and looking beautiful, and whose indiscretions bring down the kingdom, Guinevere is a capable, adventurous, and brave young girl. At then end of her adventure in the book (no spoilers here!), she is more than an equal for Arthur, simply by being herself and showing true tenacity of spirit. I loved her and this book growing up, and if you have any young girl in your life, this is the perfect gift. I use to love making up stories about the illustrations in the book, and the tapestry illustrations below the text were a great way for my parents to introduce me to the Bayeux Tapestry, and the real history of Medieval Britain. This is a truly wonderful book, and I hope my children will love it as much as I did.
