HASH(0x9d230954) out of 5 stars Create your own Summer Job 31 May 2014
By M - Published on
Format: Paperback
For several months I have been praying for a summer job for my kids. They are great babysitters, pet sitters, and hard workers. Two of them have already started small businesses centered around their creative interests and skill, but there is a lot to learn. Considering this I was quick to request The Young Entrepreneur's GUIDE TO Starting and Running A Business, Turn Your Ideas into Money when I found it available for review. One of my daughters picked it up off my desk (they each have a habit of doing that!) and dashed off to her room to read. When I went looking for it, I found it with 4 colorful sticky bookmarks.

Steve Mariotti has written an in-depth book encouraging your people to seriously consider turning their interests and talents into money-making ventures, maybe even creating their own summer job. His experience as a public high school teacher in some of New York City's most disadvantaged neighborhoods was the start of Mariotti's decision to found the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. It is a joy to hand this book back to my daughter, to let her glean for the knowledge and inspiration within.

HASH(0x9d2309a8) out of 5 stars Great for Young People 23 Oct. 2014
By Jackson Dame - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
For the past two months I've been working my way through The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting a Business. Usually I don't review longer books, this one being over 400 pages, but the topic interested me enough to take the challenge. This book covers the ins and outs of running a small business, and even gives info about what to do if that business starts to turn into something bigger.

The Review

It took me awhile to read through, but I enjoyed the contents of the book. It was stuffed full of information and provided a strong foundation for what it takes to run your own business. From finding a winning idea all the way to legal counsel, The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting a Business is a great introductory read that's geared towards teenagers.

One of the best aspects of this book is that it can help young people figure out if they are interested or passionate about the idea of business. This book doesn't glamorize the endeavor by any means, but it does paint a picture of how rewarding starting a business can be. It also goes into great detail regarding how much time, energy, and money is involved. By the end of this book I realized that, while I love the idea of having my own business, I don't have the drive to do it, especially not alone.

Not only could this book be used to help figure out what a young person wants to do with their life, but also it is a great informational tool. Through reading this book, I learned about making a business plan, how to invest wisely, and even how to ethically hire employees.

All of this being said, I recommend this book to young people who are interested in business, but I'll add the disclaimer that it's a long and hard read at times. Just like running a business, this book is not a walk in the park. It's realistic, while not being pessimistic. And for that, I really enjoyed it.

I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review. With that being said, I always share my honest opinion about the book.

HASH(0x9d230de0) out of 5 stars Definitely worth your money, but.. 8 May 2014
By Jesse Jones - Published on
Format: Paperback
I am currently reading The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting and Running a Business: Turn Your Ideas into Money! and my feedback on this book is is gives a lot of information in a simple, very easy to understand format. Personally, I have been reading small business books, blogs, and articles for the last several months, so it has a lot of information that I didn't necessarily need. Also, I like that it gives a lot of information on financing your business, but oddly it barely mentions the SBA loan assistance programs in the financing chapter. I like the success stories that book features, a little inspiration never hurt anyone!

Also, the book is updated in the sense that it doesn't ignore social marketing online, crowdfunding and green practices that you mostly don't see in other finance/marketing/business books.

Another thing I wish it had more information on cooperating-employee owned businesses. I was looking for more information on the topic, but this book does not contain it. Although, the book is less than 500 pages, if they were to explain every detail, it would be much lengthier. Another thing I really like is throughout the book it recommends other books on the related chapter, so instead of trying to fit all small business information and advice in one book, they give credit to other writers.

My last complaint about this book is that it states in book on Pg 413 (start of chapter 22) that the next chapter is a blank business plan workbook with worksheets. It says to read the sample business plan first which follows on the next page but afterwards there is NO blank business plan. What gives? Did I miss something??

To conclude, I still highly recommend this book (even with it's minor flaws), either if you have some experience in business or none at all, or you are not actually "young" anymore. It's very informational, easy to read, but not overloaded with useless knowledge like a dummies book or over complicated like some other business books.

HASH(0x9d2311ac) out of 5 stars by Steve Mariotti is an excellent resource for teens 21 Sept. 2014
By Learning Table - Published on
Format: Paperback
The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting & Running a Business: Turn Your Ideas Into Money! by Steve Mariotti is an excellent resource for teens. In our homeschool, we are using it as part of my son's high school economics course.

This comprehensive guide covers how to:
create your business
connect with customers
manage your money
protect your business
grow your business
harvest your business
write a winning business plan
The readable style and design of The Young Entrepreneur's Guide makes it possible for me to assign reading to my son, and he can complete it independently. Then, we discuss the concepts covered and he completes many of the "Think Like an Entrepreneur" activities, many of which require further research on the internet. Plenty of real-life examples are provided, such as spotlights on real entrepreneurs' stories. There are tons of charts and graphs as well, along with a complete glossary.

The simple and clear explanations in The Young Entrepreneur's Guide mean that even if you don't have a background in economics, you can understand and apply the information in the book. We find it to be an accessible resource, and a valuable addition to our high school curriculum. Highly recommended!

{The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.}
HASH(0x9d231290) out of 5 stars A Great Guide To Getting Started 1 Jan. 2016
By Charries Semidey - Published on
Format: Paperback
I have read this book individually and then I have reviewed and read it again with both my children individually. I have shared it with my colleagues at work, in addition to utilizing it for the middle school and high school student body within the school district I work in.
This book is an excellent way to get started on the entrepreneurial dreams of owning your path to success. The beauty of this book is that is really caters to the young and upcoming mindset which usually have a more instant gratification approach to finding success. This book leads the aspiring CEO through a road map all the way to the legatility of starting and owning your own business.
It is informative with great foundational ideas that can lead someone to start and run their own business from scratch. The book will lead you to finding winning ideas that fit your talents and abilities altogether. Though the book is gear toward a young generation, many attributes can be taken away as an adult, an educator, or just someone who is still trying to take the steps necessary to realize their dream of becoming an entrepreneur.
I really enjoyed the way this book can get young people interested and passionate about business, without realizing that this may be their actually calling to begin with. The ideas about starting and owning a business in this book can actually help young people decide if they want to pursue a future in business. The book does not make the idea of owning a business look easy, instead it takes you step by step in what you need to attain to actually start your own business. Everything that you need to consider from the time it involves, to the money you need to invest, to the energy needed to successfully start your way to entrepreneuship. You are guided through how to start a business plan, apply for loans and seek investors, furthermore you are guided through the process of investing wisely and hiring employees ethically.
I enjoyed this book for the value it puts into successfully starting and owning your own business as a young individual or someone who is still finding their way after a career change, or even for someone who didn't go to business school. Bottom line it can be done with a dream and hard work to bring it to pass, this book is a great resource to getting you started on your way while teaching others along the way.
