This is the true story....Everyone wants to start their own business today. It is true. Can you believe that almost half of all businesses are being started by people under 35! And the fastest growing segment of business starters is under 25! Sounds amazing, huh?
Well, I'm assuming that you too are an entrepreneur, or are considering taking the plunge. So I'll give you a quick idea as to what you'll find in the book. First let me tell you that I'm not a journalist. This book wasn't written after dozens of interviews with entrepreneurs. (More like a life time of meeting and dealing with thousands of them!) I can pretty confidently say that this is the true story of what your life will be like as an entrepreneur, because I've been doing it for most of my life. See, my first entrepreneurial venture was started while painting and selling t-shirts when I was thirteen. The second, third and fourth ventures came before I was 18. At 19 years old, while still in college, I started the Young Entrepreneurs Network to help support others in the same position. So, at 26 today, I've been in my own business for 13 years, working with young entrepreneurs for almost 7 and have been surrounded by about a half dozen entrepreneurs in my own family since birth. So, you want to know what starting and running your own business is like, well trust me, I know it well.
The Young Entrepreneur's Edge is not a text book-type book about launching your first venture. It's more of a "what to expect" and "how your life will change" book that is heavily infused with great advice and stories from others you've heard of about how to really make your dreams happen. I teach you why it's so important to start young, how to get the ball rolling, how to really tap into the right resources and people, how to build a name and the right image for yourself, how to approach a business plan, and a lot more. As far as the survival issues are concerned (and I know these well!) there's a lot of help on getting your family and friends to support you, how not to starve when you're broke, how to look at failure, how to deal with being so new to the business world, and how to keep you're life in balance when you surrender everything to a start up. (So if you're looking for sample contracts, the intricacies of applying for patents, or a guide to applying financial ratios to your business, go pick up Inc. Magazine, Forbes, or call a business professor. This is not what I wrote the book for. There's too much great information out there to try to be everything to everybody. I just write about what I know best, and maybe better than anyone.)
Most people I talk to read the book the first night they buy it...in about 3-5 hours. Many tell me they have read it several times thoughout their start ups, because they learn something new every time. Overall, I think people like it the most because it is so conversational and NOT typical of other business books. People even call it a friend. (I think that's pretty cool personally). And you know what, I don't think I'd be called by 5-10 journalists and about 10-20 entrepreneurs a week, if it weren't true. (Great book reviews actually have reached over 70 million people in the past 4 months alone!)
I'm so happy that this book has made such a great impact on so many people. If you found the book through some tv show I was on, or article I was in, here on Amazon!, or even though a friend, I encourage you to take your interest one step further and buy it. It is a tiny investment for something that could so drastically change the way you live your life.
