This is a short book - you can easily read it in an afternoon - but a real pleasure. It's presented as a quizbook but that's actually misleading: though the first part is composed of questions of varying difficulty, the second part, answering those questions, explains the significance of tiny details in Austen's novels, and is the reason why you'd actually want to buy it.

The readings do occasionally suffer from being a little glib and simplistic, but the book is both entertaining and useful. It's written in a very accessible style and would be a stimulating read for fans of Austen novels, as well as really helpful for students learning to decipher the sometimes complex subtext of Austen's writing.

Do note that the Juvenilia and minor novels are excluded, which undermine the sensitivity of some of the readings, but on most points you're in safe hands with Deirdre Le Faye, the ultimate authority on all things Austen.

handy for quiz night 21 Dec 2009

Bought this because I was running a Jane Austen quiz and it was much easier than starting from scratch myself and at least I had a reference source to back up my quiz answers should anyone ask. The quizzes run from not exactly easy to pretty tricky, so be warned if you expect the questions to be like "Who did Elizabeth Bennett marry?" then that's not going to happen in this book. Definitely a book for people who have read the books, not just watched the BBC adaptations. You don't have to be a Janeite/Austenite, but do you need some knowledge. I enjoyed the quizzes personally and found some of them challenging.

This quizbook genuinely tests knowledge on the novels. There are four levels, the easiest Level 1 tests basic knowledge but by the time you have got to Level 4, interpretative and some speculative answers are required.

A real challenge, much better than those simplistic quizzes which test one on questions such as "What is the name of the heroine of Mansfield Park?" for instance. This book helped to further my knowledge of Austen in an extremely enjoyable and fun way. I recommend!
