CD Description

The Musgraves exceptional debut album You That Way, I This Way is set for a late September release with UK and Irish tour dates to follow. The album is brimming with 50s and 60s pop/soul influences and a sound that sits somewhere between The House Martins, The Ronettes and The Beach Boys. Spring-loaded handclaps and irresistible sing-along choruses make You That Way, I This Way the perfect soundtrack for long summer s days, while often bittersweet tales of love, friendship and, ultimately, identity, provide unexpected levels of depth to their rootsy, pop anthems in waiting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brightening up my Monday 24 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
'You that way I this way' landed on my doorstep this morning and it's been playing pretty much constantly since. There are so many wonderful, uplifting and heartfelt songs that it's really difficult to put into words just how much I am enjoying this album...but I'm trying! Every single song has got something that makes it instantly catchy and I found myself singing their melodies subconsciously whilst peeling sweet potatoes this evening - I was making chips, which were delicious, partly due to the wonderful music that was accompanying their preparation, I think, but I digress...

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that you should buy this album to make your day a little bit happier and shinier, but also to introduce to such amazing songs as 'So Sofia' (my name's Sophie so I like to pretend that this song is about me), 'It's You' (which has been stuck in my head for hours) and the incredible 'Seventeen Days' which is so beautiful and haunting and words cannot express how much I am loving this song.

So yes. Please for your own sake, and for the sake of sweet potato chips throughout the land, buy this.

Also, they're amazing live, just sayin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, vibrant debut Album - not to be missed! 24 Sep 2012
By Jen G
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first discovered this amazing band late one night watching the Graham Norton Show performing their debut single "Last of Me". It was instant, it was love. Their style and exuberance just won me over completely. As I went to sleep that night I was humming "Last of Me" with it's wonderful, catchy tune, memorable lyrics, oh-oh-oh's and addictive rhythm.

Next day I found them on Youtube where they had several of the songs on this album, some in the fully mixed state and several quirky acoustic versions and wacky videos which show of their style, humour and enthusiasm for what they do. I was hooked! The Musgraves clearly have a huge amount of talent, creating some really memorable original songs that will stand the test of time and they are lovely people too!

They have a vibrant folksy-pop style that is so catchy and exuberant that they are positively addictive. They use great instrumentation that really adds to their unique style; violin, ukulele, banjo, piano, drums, xylophone, hand claps and vocal floureshes. The singer reminds me a little of a young Tony Hadley. His voice is just so smooth and has such beautiful tone and resonance.

You would especially love The Musgraves if you like bands such as R.E.M. (think Shiny Happy People & Everybody Hurts), The Feeling (12 Stops), Dexys Midnight Runners (Come on Eileen), but they have something so special and unique of their own, that it's difficult to just compare. Their quirky videos and humour makes me think of The Monkeys. Do they all live in a house together? lol :D

The theme of the album is a story of love, from the early excitement and pain of first encounters, to deep love and falling apart. The lyrics are interesting, real and memorable and the music quirky, vibrant, expressive and enthusiastic.

Another reviewer wrote this album is musical prozac and I totally agree! Summery, happy sound to lift your mood if you need it or to send you dancing and clapping around like an excited child (I'm in my 40s, I do this in private!)Love the harmonies, love the rhythm claps, love the violin and piano and all the rest and this band has the best shoe collection of any band, ever:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars SO uplifting 8 Oct 2012

After seeing The Musgraves a few times live, then on Graham Norton I knew I had to have this cd when it came out. You can hear the love for music in every song. A very original sound in today's day and age where everything usually sounds so same-ish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sounding local band 22 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this CD for myself which in itself is unusual as I usually download all my music. Wanted to help contribute to a local band though, and had heard one of their tracks on the Graham Norton show.
I have to say, I think I prefer their covers on their Youtube channel more so than most of their own music, but it is pretty good nonetheless.

A very upbeat album, definitely one to listen to in Spring and Summer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, bouncy and captivating - but . . . 31 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Trust me to buck the trend after so many glowing reviews.
Generally speaking, I quite agree with other reviewers - this is a real breath of fresh air!
A joy and pleasure to listen to - light, airy "pop" (sorry) music.
But - the but is my issue with the running time; just a tad over 38 minutes! That leaves a lot of "empty space".
Surely something extra could have been added? I'd have been happy with a bit of extra filling!
So - please take the three stars in context - the content is excellent but I felt short changed.
