Lee's Best Yet 12 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I've been a fan of VG Lee's writing for some time. Her last novel 'The Diary of A Provincial Lesbian' was extremely funny and full of fascinating insights about the way people behave 'in the provinces'. There are even more laughs and greater insight in this, her first short story collection. Having now settled into becoming a provincial lesbian, the author explores the world around her, the various characters she encounters, the love affairs and the disastrous dates. Lee is also a stand-up comic, and it shows. I laughed out loud on many occasions. She also good at exploring the frailties of human relationships and the almost accidental way in which friendships are sometimes formed. Possibly my favourite story in the collection is 'Shush', where the narrator and her straight female friend pay a visit to the local cinema to see 'Pride & Prejudice'. The author recently read this story at the London Literature Festival, and it brought the house down. Do yourself a favour. Buy this book and brighten up your day.

A Treasure 21 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
It was with a heavy heart that I finished V.G. Lee's `As You Step Outside'. This wonderful collection of short stories was my book at bedtime, a delight at the end of a day.

Lee's work is very human and spookily convincing. Her stories are authentic and familiar. The characters could be people you know, a neighbour or old school friend. She draws them with an economy of words yet her eye for detail has the compelling force of a genuine observer of human nature. Her dialogue is not only word perfect but she also manages to convey the unspoken and often more important communication that goes on in relationships.

My favourites of this collection: `Hotel du Lac' which reveals the unfolding of an odd, understated relationship; `The Passing Guest' with its surprising and slightly frightening twist; and `Behind the Glass' for its dark edge. But the story I probably enjoyed the most was `Shirley Poppy', a warm and heartbreaking tale.

Heroines of Lee's stories are often passive observers of their own undoing but what makes them fascinating is their awareness of their demise.

It's no wonder that V.G. Lee has a cult following. Her work is original, quirky and often very, very funny. I put her writing up there with Anne Enright and Annie Proulx.
