I've been a fan of VG Lee's writing for some time. Her last novel 'The Diary of A Provincial Lesbian' was extremely funny and full of fascinating insights about the way people behave 'in the provinces'. There are even more laughs and greater insight in this, her first short story collection. Having now settled into becoming a provincial lesbian, the author explores the world around her, the various characters she encounters, the love affairs and the disastrous dates. Lee is also a stand-up comic, and it shows. I laughed out loud on many occasions. She also good at exploring the frailties of human relationships and the almost accidental way in which friendships are sometimes formed. Possibly my favourite story in the collection is 'Shush', where the narrator and her straight female friend pay a visit to the local cinema to see 'Pride & Prejudice'. The author recently read this story at the London Literature Festival, and it brought the house down. Do yourself a favour. Buy this book and brighten up your day.
