Product Description

All seven episodes from the second series of the BBC comedy from writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft. When Alf Stokes (Paul Shane) and James Twelvetrees (Jeffrey Holland) meet in the trenches of World War One, they help save the life of a wounded officer. Years later, they both find themselves working on the household staff of that officer's brother, Lord Meldrum (Donald Hewlett). In this series, the staff have to be on their best behaviour as the Prime Minister is coming to dinner, and James is embarrassed when his roguish father arrives at the house, on the run from the police. Episodes are: 'Labour or Love'; 'Trouble at Mill'; 'Money Talks'; 'The Meldrum Vases'; 'The Wounds of War'; 'Stranger in the Night'; and 'Royal Flush'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 17 April 2006

I *love* this show! My mother videod it off the TV for me when I was little and I have watched it over and over again since then. I was so happy when I saw it was on DVD as my vidoes are seriously worn out!

It's obvious comedy and in places dated and to more modern eyes some slightly dodgy jokes (eg about gays and chinamen!) but all in all it is hilarious.

I can't wait for the last 2 series to be issued on DVD as well!

Can't praise this enough. Underrated comedy, perfect in every way. Story, cast, direction, acting first class. In my opinion the best thing produced by these writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 21 Dec 2009

What can I say about this series that hasn't already been said before. It's by far the best by these writers. Dads Army is now a bit dated, hi de hi was good in its time, but even though You Rang MLord is nearly 20 years old now, it's still the funniest of the lot. So buy it and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Cult Series! 9 Sep 2012

Often wrongly called a sequel to "Hi-De-Hi"; it is actually a spin-off. The difference is that a sequel has the same characters (usually played by the same actors); a spin-off often has its characters introduced in an episode of the original show, but they are not really from that show (like Lavern and Shirley spun-off Happy Days). Half of the actors in You Rang M'Lord were in Hi-De-Hi, but playing different characters, others were in It Ain't Half Hot, Mum, in different roles. So this is really a spin-off from Hi-De-Hi, and It Ain't Half Hot, Mum.

Having said that, this show is the equal, if not better than the other two shows. It has an almost unequalled cast of actors: Paul Shane, Jeffrey Holland, Su Polluck, Donald Hewlett, Michael KNowles, Bill Pertwee, Angelar Scouler, Catherine Rabbett, John Clegg, Kenneth Conner, Fred Bowness, etc.

This is what Upstairs Downstairs would have been if it had been funny (or entertaining). Interestingly this is a 50-minute sitcom. Most go 20-30 minutes. But the 50-minute format works, allowing for more character development. Comedy is less slapstick than Hi-De-Hi, but there are occasions of very broad comedy. A hilarious, and much underrated classic!
