5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and funny 21 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I loved this book. I was completely engrossed by it, and from about halfway through I was in floods of tears while still having the odd wry smile. Told in the pitch-perfect voice of a thoughtful yet spiky ten-year-old girl living by the Liffey with her mother and two younger brothers, it's a touching and generous portrait of the vulnerability yet toughness of people under stress, very moving yet humorous with brilliantly vivid characters. And brilliantly written by a prize-winning writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut novel 17 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I absolutely loved this book. Despite (or perhaps because of) its harrowing subject matter it is a 'read it in one sitting' novel. Beautifully crafted. You is - as the title suggests - narrated in the second person. This puts a neccessary little distance between reader and narrator. In Ms Ni Chonchuir's very capable hands this works. One cannot but empathise with each and every one of the beautiful, damaged, glorious characters in this short novel; each one's frailities exposed with her firm but loving pen. A classic.
