Product Description

In the wake of being unceremoniously fired from her Manhattan-based copy editor position at a wine magazine, Hale Martin must now pack her bags and head to her grandmother's funeral. She hasn't been home to Haven Harbor, Florida, in five years, and still fragile from her recent divorce, her heart isn't into putting up with her oddball family and the town she grew up in. Along with all the tears, flowers, and mystery ingredient casseroles, the funeral also brings painful memories and shocking secrets. Hale finds comfort in her appreciation of wine, her dream of being a novelist, and the rekindling of her friendship with her old high school crush, Jordan Valvano. In her search for answers, direction, and purpose, Hale just might find true love--and better still, herself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different and good 28 Jun. 2014
By A. W. - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Don't expect a perfectly edited text, as sadly, a few things were overlooked in the last pass through - but do expect a story that doesn't follow exactly as expected through the twists of a romance novel. This isn't your standard story. This is something else, something different than a standard romance - something more.
She's not over the surprise end of her marriage, is stunned by a firing motivated by a spreadsheet and not her performance, and before she can react to the loss of her job, she's told her grandmother has died. Somehow she has to try to keep it all together long enough to help her mother get through the funeral. The funny thing is, life has a way of going on when you're not ready for it to happen.
Parts of the book made me cheer, other parts made me want to slap someone. Turned out, I wasn't the only one who felt that way, leaving me wanting to cheer again.
Read along with Hale as she learns more about her family, herself, and coming to grips with what remains. It is a slow, satisfying ride that doesn't end where you expect it to end.
All that and wine as well.

I was given a copy of the book to review, being free to review it as I saw fit. This was my honest reaction.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed _You Had Me at Merlot_--so much so that I ... 10 July 2014

I really enjoyed _You Had Me at Merlot_--so much so that I read it in fewer than 24 hours. I simply couldn't put it down. The characters were quirky yet believable, and the plot realistic yet intriguing.

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Gibson's Ghost Huntress books (please write more soon, Marley!!), but I wasn't sure if I would like her contemporary fiction without the paranormal aspects. I can now say that I most certainly did enjoy this book--and I also learned a great deal about wines!! :)

My only criticism is that I would have liked to have had another chapter (or two) between the last one and the epilogue so that the final character introduced could have been more concretely developed. I felt as I did at the end of the newest Jane Eyre movie (2011, I think): not enough time was given to the joyous reunion between Jane and Mr. Rochester. Here I felt that I was robbed of the joyous discovery of this new character and how this new character fits into the overall scheme of the story.

But overall, I thought this book was compelling. I haven't read an un-put-downable book in a long time, so _You Had Me at Merlot_ was a lovely interlude among everything else I'm doing this summer (such as teaching a fan fiction writing class to kids ages 8-17). I'm definitely going to check out more of Marley Gibson's books while I wait (toe-tapping impatiently) for the next Ghost Huntress book. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for this engaging read! 24 Jun. 2014
By M. Bauder - Published on

I very much enjoyed this book. It is a fast, fun read, with highly relatable characters. I especially appreciated the realistic depiction of the interactions Hale had with her various family members. This story was a little different than many romances, in that the true focus was on the growth of the main character into her own person, rather than on finding and keeping a love interest. As a person who enjoys wine (though on a much more casual level than those in the story), I also appreciated the descriptions/information relating to wine within the story. I have previously only read Marley Gibson's YA books. Based on You Had Me at Merlot, I will *definitely* be seeking out her adult books to read as well!

1/2 star docked for copyediting errors that were a bit distracting.

This book was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Relatable Story! 16 July 2014

I loved reading this book. People relate with books for different reasons. Hale Martin, the main character is a 45 year old divorcee, fired from her job for a petty reason, and goes home to her dysfunctional family in Florida to deal with her grandmother's funeral. Although there's nothing funny about these circumstances, the story is written with a great deal of humor.

She deals with her family and the choices she makes while she's there, in realistic ways.

You get wine advice, a Tarot card reading, and all sorts of twists and fun surprises along the way.

Marley Gibson is a very entertaining writer, and I look forward to reading the other books she's written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Beach Book! 25 May 2014

This is such a fun book to spend a lazy afternoon with. I was hooked right away when Hale was shockingly fired from her job, something many of us can relate to. Then I settled in as she went home, down South for her grandmother's funeral and caught up with people from her past. Really enjoyed it, a fast, fun read.
