'Manna makes the most of Blackstone's deceptively simple text in a playful exploration of opposites. He creates a stage of sorts, for a boy and girl who perform each couplet... For I'm a valley/ You're a hill,' the girl, lying in the lower left-hand corner of her framed vignette, looks across the gutter at the boy perched on a hilltop that rivals those pictured in Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince... Manna's delicate, penumbral watercolors retain a timeless, fairytale quality depicting enchanted forests populated by castles and towers... The audience will appreciate Manna's theatrical approach to wordplay' - 'Manna makes the most of Blackstone's deceptively simple text in a playful exploration of opposites. This book has few words - a short rhyming sentence on each page accompanied by one of two characters in picture form, covering early learning themes of opposites alongside nature, animals, weather, shapes and vocabulary expansion. It therefore has appeal to girls and boys, those beginning to read or developing literacy, as well as parents generally. It reflects well little peoples imaginatory capacity showing the children become animals, squares etc and could be acted out as well. The water colour like pictures haze accross the page and have borders alongside detailed pictures to discover, identify and name other related childhood objects. The art work and ideas are really beautiful and are in line with other Barefoot Books/Steiner type materials ie children can appreciate and benefit from serious, thoughtful and detailed books. A beautiful, different picture book that aids early learning and promotes the message of individuality, creativity and acceptance.

I'm so glad I found this book - it made the perfect present for a friend who'd given birth to boy/girl twins! It's unique in that the concept is quite abstract e.g. I'm a valley, you're a hill; I'm wild, you're tame... with illustrations of the boy or girl 'acting out' each meaning e.g. the girl lying in a valley, the boy standing on a hill; the girl dressed up as a lion in the wild, the boy dressed up as a cat, curled on the rug by the fire. The last page is 'I'm you, you're me' and it's just a lovely, poignant way of illustrating every person's uniqueness. It's also great for visualising opposites & learning words they might otherwise not. I have to say though that I also bought the board book version which I much prefer; this hardcover format has paper pages and so is less durable. I've read it to my 2 year old and he loves it, though I think it would be even more appropriate for older children, say 3 -5s.

Promotes uniqueness and acceptance 15 July 2010

Lovely, lovely illustrations paired with a short and sweet manuscript which acknowledges the differences between the two children in this book. "You and Me" is sure to open up dialogue and promote creative thinking while encouraging young children to accept themselves while also accepting others.

Spell binding! 21 April 2012
By Graham Thomas - Published on Amazon.com

As the mother of a child with Autism I have to be very thoughtful about what books we introduce to our son so as not to overwhelm him. I originally purchased this book for his infant sister, however it has transformed into more than a simple opposites book. The pictures provoke thought and imigination and are splendidly done. (I'm a Tiger/You're a Bear- the little girl keeps her striped stockings and girly shoes, though she is a very recognizable tiger.) On the borders of each illustration are tie-ins you can use to inspire a more complete picture in your childs imagination. I also volunteer at my sons school and this is an All-Time Favorite with most of the kids, who are all much older than the 2-year old age recommended for You and Me. I have even gotten booed when I walk into a classroom and the kids spot that I do not have this book under my arm. One of the teachers told me after I had read it to her class 8 or 9 times that even she has gotten a little giddy when I arrive with it because the kids are calmer and SO mesmerized by the simple word combinations. It's more than opposites, it's opposites outside the box.

Great book--it's become a staple bedtime book with my niece and nephew. Both love completing our sentences when we read it to them, and looking at the detail of the pictures. Fabulous book, and great gift for a new baby.
