Biography

Semi Precious Weapons formed in New York City. Graduates of the Berklee College of Music, the band immediately began drawing attention for their raucously tight and famously over the top live performances, as well as for their striking visual style. The band played sold out shows throughout the city, promoting warehouse parties, while becoming mainstays at Brooklyn events and New York Fashion ... Product Description

CD Description

New York four piece Semi Precious Weapons have the distiction of being the first signings to Lady Gaga's record label, Haus of Gaga, and their rise to prominence was also helped in no small part thanks to a high profile support slot on Gaga's worldwide arena tour. You Love You was recorded in Los Angeles in 2009 and produced by the band with Jack Joseph Puig (Green Day,Beck).

BBC Review

New Yorkers Semi Precious Weapons are Lady Gaga's darlings and regular support band, and their short but forceful second album shows the particular trash-garage-pop spunk that makes her a fan. The wholehearted endorsement of one of pop's most towering figures is a double-edged spike heel–it's a great reference, but it immediately invites negative comparison. SPW can't approach her bamboozling supremacy, but then no one can at present, and they have a certain mucky sparkle of their own.

Superficially–and best believe they're superficial (not that this is necessarily a problem)–they have the delirious whiff of a Bill Bailey Placebo pastiche. Singer Justin Tranter, voice dripping with mascara, attacks every line like a row of apples, spitting arch post-post-punk mouthfuls every which way and apparently sterr-etching his cakehole so a-wyyde-ah that, were it possible, he could fit his whole head in there. Yet past the Darkness-grade absurdity and preening and peacock-poncing there is undeniable ability, and a nose for a vicious hook.

It's deliberately dirty stuff, like the Scissor Sisters improvising in a toilet and like totally doing it, etc. Statues of Ourselves is framed by a chorus of theatrical sex-gasps. The word "sticky" and the verb "to finger" are used to great effect, all so pointedly and moistly and with such relish that when a stray "f***" shows up, it hardly sounds like "f***" at all. Startling ballad Leave Your Pretty to Me is so out of place and so splendidly overblown, with its falsetto peaks and swathes of strings, that it endears them to you. Tender closer Look at Me raises a titter after such an onslaught of genitalia ("Look at me while we do it"–tee-hee!). It sounds very knowing indeed, like a comment on a comment–but it's a consistent pose, and maybe not that far removed from sincerity.

They are exuberantly naughty and flouncy and beastly and flimsy, and this is fine: it's a fun album. Mind you, if you can still get a brush through your hair, wake up before noon most days and are over 19, it's liable to make you feel old.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most amazing band EVER 7 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
Semi Precious Weapons are the perfect mix of good old fashioned rock n roll and glamour!

First heard of the band in 2009 when they started to open for Lady Gaga. Saw them last month at the monster ball and they really are amazing! They sounded exactly like they do on the EP.

Their songs are catchy and funny but still pure rock and roll. Many assume the band are glam rock because of lead singer Justin Tranter but they couldn't be more wrong.

I cannot wait for their album release and Im sure I wont be disappointed by the songs on it!

Buy their album!!!!!!!!! xxxxxxx

4.0 out of 5 stars Naughty But Nice 9 July 2010
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Semi Precious Weapons are the kind of sassy act which New York City
spits out into the glam-gutter from time to time. They're famous for it!
These four young wannabes do the business better than most.
They have a sense of humour and dish out a nice line in confrontational
sequined-punk-pop with panache and not a little energy.

Justin Tranter sings; Stevy Pyne plays guitar; Cole Whittle plays bass
and Dan Crean thumps the drums. Together they create a simple
formula and stick to it. The nine tracks which comprise 'You Love You'
pass by in the blink of an eye. It is a highly entertaining miscellany.

They are fortunate to have the legendary producer Tony Visconti behind
the mixing console. His consummate instinct in distilling the essence of
every act he has ever worked with is effortlessly in evidence here too.
It is a no-frills sound which gets to the point without unnecessary decoration.

The band's penchant for using rude words and suggestive imagery is very
funny, not least of all because most of us have encountered the 'F' word
before and although Mr Tranter does not imbue the expletive with any greater
level of meaning than it previously possessed it must be acknowledged that
he delivers it with energy and chutzpah! Opening and title track 'Semi Precious
Weapons' finds him spitting it out with particularly provocative relish.

The album is more naughty than nasty however. I feel quite certain that
all four of these young men have mothers who love them (most probably
in the New Jersey suburbs rather than the darker corners of Manhattan!)

'Put A Diamond In It' is a particularly appealing confection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saw these guys live and WOW! 7 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
Was at a Lady Gaga concert the other day expecting to see Alphabeat supporting, but on role Semi Precious Weapons and WOW!!!! Thank god for the change in line up from the original march line up. These guys are amazing with so much energy and vibrancy. The lead singer is something else, completely enigmatic and utterly fabulous, buy this album if you can handle it.
