Product Description

Daily Mail
'This is a witty and affectionate collection that shows the House of Windsor to be both down-to-earth and utterly regal.'

Product Description
During the early 1980s, the "Guardian" first published two camp anecdotes about the Queen Mother. Readers reeled to see stories actually printed in a national newspaper that until then had had only an underground existence in certain circles. After that, tales about the royal family became respectable; they were also, quite rightly, believed. Taken as a whole they reflect the contradictory roles we like royalty to fulfil: unworldly and impossibly regal or engagingly domesticated and just like us, or camp, worldly and outrageous. In this affectionate tribute Thomas Blaikie has gathered together a compendium of stories, many of them never published before, which provide access to an alternative world. How exactly does a Queen react when she finds her footmen draped in her jewels? What does she do to amuse herself as she whiles away the hours sitting for her portrait? And how did the Duchess of Windsor and the Queen Mother really get on? This illustrated book answers these questions and poses many more in its celebration of the diverse personalities of the House of Windsor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Royal Seal Of Approval, 1 May 2003
By A Customer
I first became interested in the works of Thomas Blaikie after reading his reviews in the Yorkshire post and was pleasantly surprised to see that he had written a book.

I found 'You look awfully like the Queen' a witty insight into the personal lives of the royal family. The book consists of many short, true stories of the Royals...my favourite one being the story about the pickle-it gets my seal of approval!!
But I say no more about that...you will find out when you read it.

I would recommend this to anyone wishing to understand more about the mentality of our Royal family-this book is as precious to me as the crown jewels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swell!, 19 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Having discovered the brilliance of Thomas Blaikie I am waiting on the edge of my seat for the next instalment from this magnificent writer. You Look Awfully Like the Queen was a roaringly funny and rib-ticklingly tantalising account of the lesser known details of the lives of your english royals. Amazing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, they can be like us!, 7 Jan 2003

What a breath of fresh air! A royalty book which is witty, sympathetic, and very readable. It shows a side to the Royal Family that we all know is there, but is normally hidden. Even my father who is a devout republican chuckled once or twice..

3.0 out of 5 stars Wit and Wisdom? - I didn't find either!
I bought this book as a republican who wants to understand more of the Royal family, but also as one who has no grievance with the Windsors per se, but as one who has concern... Read more
