* The majority of these recordings are as good as, if not better than, the hit versions that followed in their wake. Many will be a revelation to those who bought and have long cherished those hit versions. At least half of them have never been reissued before, much less appeared on CD.
* Happily there is plenty more where these come from, and plans are already afoot for a third volume for 2011 release...

Better than the First!,
By
This review is from: You Heard It Here First! Volume 2 (Audio CD)
A quality cd - from the informative booklet to the sound quality of the cd, even better than the first volume (a great job 'Ace'). Out of the 24 tracks, i had only heard eight of them before. It was extremely interesting to hear the original versions of some of my favourite songs such as 'Love of the common people' (Everly Brothers and Nicky Thomas) and the wonderful 'You don't have to say you love me'. My two favourite tracks are 'I'm your Puppet' by Dan Penn and the fantastic melancholic 'Then you can tell me goodbye' by Don Cherry. All in all a fantastic concept gets better and better. Bring on volume 3.

Ace do it again,
By
This review is from: You Heard It Here First! Volume 2 (Audio CD)
Ace records have once again produced a great CD that all serious collectors of music will want in their collection. Just because thse songs were not hits by the original artist, it doesn't mean that they are inferior, in most cases (but not all) they are every bit as good. In many cases they are album track or B sides that somebody has picked up on, recorded it, and had a hit. This collection, like the first volume showcases the talent of the original artist/s. Of the two dozen songs on this CD comes comes a few surprises, none more so than the 1939 original of the lion sleeps tonight by Soloman Linda. As always the booklet that comes with this CD gives an insight how an unknown South Afican record could end up as a huge hit for the Tokens and latterly Tight Fit, via Pete Seeger. There are a lot of gems on this CD, too many to list. The best thing to do is buy a copy, a serious collector will not reget it

Ace Records - So Aptly Named,
By
This review is from: You Heard It Here First! Volume 2 (Audio CD)
Top marks to the powers that be at Ace Records, they have come up with another amazing selection of tracks that are well known, but not by the artistes on this cd. This, the second volume is equally as good as the first, and everything said by other reviewers I have to agree with. Stand out tracks for me, the Barry McGuire version of The Mamas & Papas hit California Dreamin, do my ears deceive me, or is this the same backing track as used on the Mamas & Papas, The Four Preps version of Love Of The Common People, in fact, there's hardly a bad track on here. I have to recommend this cd very highly, finally a tip for pop music quiz compilers, this is an excellent cd to use. Let's hope that Ace are working on further volumes.
