With If You Happy With, You Need Do Nothing, Alfie seem set on becoming the latest group of young scallywags to come slouching out of Manchester, set on turning the music world upside down. Collecting all the tracks from their first three vinyl-only single releases ("alfie EP", "Bookends" and "Montevideo") plus two new tracks, If You Happy With places Alfie up with fellow Mancunian upstarts such as the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, the Stone Roses and Oasis. Imagine a more languid take on that refried 1960s vibe that the Madchester scene pumped full of attitude and took out dancing: "2 Up 2 Down" is Arthur Lee's Love jostling with the Lovin' Spoonful over who gets to use the trumpet, while "Manor House Farm" sounds like Tim Buckley in a sunshine-flooded Salford. Alfie are a little bit of summer and a whole lot of Baggy; only this time, it's wearing sandals. --Billie Swift

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning 1st album 18 July 2001
Format:Audio CD
In the best possible way, these 11 songs are effortless, like this is the music they could be bothered to make in between gambolling and experimenting and living the kind of sun-dappled, smoke-scented lives of which people walled up in offices and inhibitions can only dream.
Yet this is music that is far from naïve or innocent - there should be no doubt that we are dealing with a smart band here, and not a flock of spring lambs strayed into rock'n'roll's fold. 'It's Just About The Weather' (from the 'Montevideo' EP) shows how Lee Gorton's sunsheeeeine inflections can sound like a feathery cherub-Liam, while The Stone Roses' baggy swagger underwrites their buoyant attitude. Better still is their effusive creativity: while most bands who try to combine folk seriousness with knowing about trainers end up in that tepid pool of 'comedown music' - the kind of earnest-faced strum only Beth Orton could love - Alfie's playful instrumentation is too adventurous to settle for being the afterthought to a heavy night out. They can make 'Check The Weight' fade out like a prototype pre-industrial Tortoise, or the excellent 'Umlaut' mimic the woozy flow and weave of My Bloody Valentine. They can tug jazz into 'You Make No Bones', drag Belle & Sebastian into a busy road on '2 Up 2 Down', or pinpoint Manchester as the alt- countryside on 'Manor House Farm'.

5.0 out of 5 stars sheer genius!!!! 1 Mar 2001
Format:Audio CD
I have now seen this band twice live, and have been some what amazed by the talent and diversity of Alfie. The album contains the brilliant "you make no bones" which has been played on MTV2 now for months but i haven't seen in the shops at all?! I'd reccommend this album if you're looking for something different but equally amazing. This band is going to HUGE in months to come! Well done Lee Gorton and co. keep the great songs coming!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cellotastic 15 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Alfie are the surprise package this year, with little exposure apart from NME support. The album has an array of unique and beautiful tracks ranging from the "You Make No Bones" rich in Matt's cello and Sam's double bass sounds to the extremely relaxed "Check Your Weight" with soothing vocals and mellow drumming to finish with. This album is for the eclectic ear and slips alongside Starsailor, Turin Brakes and Elbow as this years must haves. Check them live.

"you make no bones" and "its just about the weather" shine through with true alfie style. They will surely be a big band in the future. the next coldplay with starsailor and turin brakes???
