3.0 out of 5 stars A grower, but very worth listening 4 Dec 2004
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album initially disappointed (as I'd got her others before, which set a very high standard!), but has definitely grown on me. The opening 'I'm Gonna Soothe You' is fantastic, and there's a nice variety of styles (particularly 'The Way Young Lovers Do' and the uproarious title track). I still feel her voice and songwriting are better on her other solo albums, but listening again the conviction in her voice has won me over afresh. This has more country material than her more baroque works (like Life Is Sweet, her next album), and is a gentler introduction to her work, along with her eponymous debut.

Maria's second solo album is a good one but is lacking in something. A number of cover versions are here, which make it more accessible to casual passers-by, and generally they are quite faithful to their sources and better delivered... yet I feel sure this lady peaks with her own material, and it is these tracks which lift this album up to 4 stars (or maybe I can't bring myself to truly love the Van Morrison numbers). 'I'm Gonna Soothe You' is wonderfully sensuous: "My touch is gentle, my body is warm... let me kiss your tears away... lay your head on my breast, I'll do the rest"... er, where was I? That bittersweet feeling is conjured up once again in 'Only Once' and the vocal arrangements give real weight to 'I Forgive You' and the tongue in cheek title track. Worth wasting some precious time over.

3.0 out of 5 stars The voice saves it 5 Jan 2009
Format:Audio CD
It was always going to be a tall order... Maria Mckee's sparkling eponymous debut album was deserving of all the plaudits it got. So, four years later and the difficult second album comes laden with expectation. In the end it's not surprising that 'You Gotta Sin' doesn't match her debut (ignore the Amazon review insisting 'You Gotta Sin' is a better album - that's just silly). What is surprising is that it is better than it actually should be: A lack of quality songs, too many cover versions, an unhealthy reliance on named session players, and a production team who wouldn't know EQ if it smacked them in the face conspires against this album succeeding, but it just about does.

The reason it works is all down to Maria. Despite the questionable quality of the songs and shameful production, luckily for us, she is at the top of her game and her voice soars, pierces and pushes its way into your mind like some delicious torture. Even the plastic soul of 'I'm Gonna Soothe You' touches you; the way her voice teases it's way through the semi erotic lyric should carry a health warning.

Unfortunately there are more just ok songs than oustanding ones. The worst two - 'I Forgive You' and 'I Can't Make it Alone', the result of some appalling production. 'I Forgive You' has everything thrown in but the kitchen sink and as a result just turns out to be an over-the-top mess (a more subtle and therefore much better version is on the Live at the BBC album) and the latter - a Goffin/King classic - sounds like some poor demo, with a bass riff devoid of any bottom end and the drummer sounding like he's using a packing case for a snare. If you've ever heard Dusty Springfield's version you'll appreciate that Maria shouldn't have gone anywhere near this song.
