This all started as a private personal diary, a written record to accompany the mountain of photos Mary took. Then Doug wondered if the family might also like to read it. He showed what he was doing to his cousin Maury, a retired newspaper editor, who immediately saw the potential. "This is good stuff. It deserves a much wider audience than just the family. Carry on writing, finish the draft, then take it to a publisher."

Doug Powell married Mary in 1960 and they live inSouthend-on-Sea. He enjoys writing but regardsmusic as his favourite hobby?he is pianist, organistand singer. His lifelong interest in amateur dramaticshas brought such diverse roles as woman-hatingschoolmaster, retarded cripple, Judas Iscariot andpantomime dame.
