Product Description

Product Description

You don't have to be Jewish to get back at the shmendriks of the world! Yiddish - the most colourful language in the history of mankind. What other language gives you a whole dictionary of ways to tell someone to drop dead? That schmuck, for instance, who got promoted over you? He should be transformed into a chandelier, to hang by day and to burn by night. In these endlessly entertaining pages, you will find the perfect insult for every occasion, from the short and sweet (A plague on you - a finsteren yor) to the whole megillah (He should marry the daughter of the Angel of Death - khasene hobn zol er mit di malekh hamoves tokhter). Complete with hundreds of the most creative curses for the putzes and kvetchers of the world, together with the fascinating background of their origins and much Jewish wisdom born of suffering over the centuries, this is an indispensable guide for Jews and Gentiles alike. When it comes to cursing someone who sorely needs it, may you never be at a loss for words again. After Amo, Amas, Amat it's time to enjoy the joys of Yiddish! This work is very funny, and scholarly too. If you don't buy this book, may a soft balcony fall on your head! It contains all the wisdom (and curses!) born of the Jewish experience over thousands of years. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

Lita Epstein grew up around Yiddish. While her mother and aunts usually used Yiddish to discuss something they didn't want the kids to know, its meaning gradually seeped through. This is her thirteenth book. She cannot promise it will be her last. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Say it in Yiddish 2 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
Hilarious, funny, clever, all words which fail to describe Ms Epstein's take on life. Everyone should know the joy of telling their boss "May the angel of death fall in love with you!" (said with a smile it can sound like a compliment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
A great read and an enjoyable introduction to a new, vibrant language.

Say it in yiddish 12 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
The book of Yiddish insults and curses, not only for Jews, but for anyone who appreciated the play on words so loved by jewish commedians. No subject is sacrosanct.'When does the wealthy man go hungry/ When the doctor orders him...200 pages of laughter and a glossery to give one the Yiddish, How to say it, and the English in case one needs the explaination. This book is the right size to slip in the pocket and read on the train, but take care other passengers will not know why you are laughing. This is fun for jews and Gentiles alike.

Irony for Beginners 5 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I have a good collection of yiddish books and dictionaries and this addition to my bookshelf is entertaining reading. In it the author captures the oblique ironies of the language. In yiddish an insult can sound like a gift. It is not a book to make anyone profficient in speaking yiddish. But it is a great help in appreciating the nuances of the phrases we slip into our own speech.
