Product Description

From public television's favourite drawing teacher, this title offers a new method to create realistic line drawings from imagination or from sight in just 20 minutes a day - even if you have no drawing experience. Drawing is a skill, not a talent-anyone can draw! If you've got a pencil, Mark Kistler will show you how. "You Can Draw in 30 Days" takes the intimidation out of learning to draw, providing a thorough education in basic pencil drawing through deceptively quick and simple instruction. In 30 lessons of 20-minutes each day, the reader will learn how to create amazingly sophisticated three dimensional renderings-from landscapes to the human figure. Using Mark's entertaining approach to the basics, each quick lesson focuses on one fundamental skill. The lessons are progressive and build skills in a specific order. The book features hundreds of line drawings throughout, featuring pages from Mark's sketchbook, giving the reader a 'behind the scenes' look at how Mark created the lessons, as well as actual adult student sketchbook pages. At the end of each lesson, Mark shows readers how the particular fundamental lesson concept actually applies to more advanced drawing. "You Can Draw in 30 Days" makes it fun and easy to expertly draw everything from the world around you to three-dimensional pictures totally from your imagination.

This book is the best guide to learning to draw I've ever seen. It really is geared towards a complete beginner - far too many so-called beginner's drawing books start off with something like 'this is a pencil' but then almost immediately start showing beautifully drawn, lifelike groups of figures, animals, landscapes, etc. with a vague suggestion that you should be able to draw them from life. Mark Kistler's book isn't like that. He leads the beginner by the hand through small steps - and they're not just 'copy me' instructions, either - they are 'this is how it's done' instructions, readily applicable to other subjects. As someone who has repeatedly tried to learn to draw, and failed miserably every time, this book is a delight. By the end of the first lesson (30 minutes or so) I'd drawn a peach from my fridge, shaded it, and it actually looked like a peach! In 3 dimensions too! Amazing! I highly recommended this book for all budding but hopeless artists like me - it will set you on the right path. My copy is on the Kindle, although I'm reading it on the Kindle app of an iPad. Illustrations are very clear in the Kindle version (i'd thought they might not be) and they are even easy to follow on the tiny screen of my iPhone (which also has Amazon's Kindle app). Great book.

Definitely for the complete and utter beginner!
I love this book!
You will have a lot of fun working your way through the lessons they are all very approachable and the results are very much achievable!!
You start with simple shapes and simplistic shading and you finish drawing your own hand after thirty days! I proud of of my work too! I often have a flick through my sketch book to see how I have progressed!
There's tons of material in here when you include all the extra little bonus lessons and there's lots of other students comparisons to make you feel good about your attempts!
Get this book as your first stepping stone! A few pencils a blending stomp and slim sketch book are your only equipment necessaries!
It's a very good book and it's written by a very nice man!
I like to keep my reviews concise, hope I've helped!
Kindest Regards!

draw in 30 days 16 Feb 2011

This book is really good for learning the basics to creating realistic drawings! Im using it in an art class for 3-6th graders. I present the short 10 minute lessons at the beginning of class. The students work in their drawing journals. Even my 6 year old is learning the lessons at home! They are short, simple and doable for anyone! I prefer this book over m.kistlers other book called draw squad. Great for both adults and students. After the simple drawing lesson there is even an option to take the lesson to the next step and apply it in some other way to create a piece of art.

Highly Recommended! 12 April 2011

I bought this book elsewhere after losing my copy of "Draw Squad." Before using his book I cannot say how many failed attempts I had at learning to draw - dozens! I lost the first book after completing about half of it, and I was excited to see this one for adults. I'm halfway through this one now and the results are awesome! I may be able to realize my childhood dream of becoming a cartoonist. You go from rendering simple shapes to experimenting with figure drawing exercises in 30 lessons. It goes farther than "Draw Squad," which means that even if I find the old book I still have new material.
Also: there are complementary lessons on his website and I highly recommend those too. Mr. Kistler was very responsive to a problem I had with the site - my email was answered the next day!
If you have trouble with the exercises I suggest doing them over and over - I think that is what worked for me. If you have trouble with the shading try a different pencil. I use "H" (hard) for sketching and "B" or "2B" for dark lines and shading.

Great book that does what it claims 27 Dec 2010

I have used this book to learn the basics of realistic drawing with great pleasure. If you can give it 20 minutes or so a day, and follow the steps outlined, you will improve your sketching ability greatly. The step by step instructions and the encouragment given by Mark makes this a fun to use resource.
