Timothy Leary, the psychadelic guru, also made some musical journeys. This record contains three 'songs'. In the first one you have nice groove built up by bass, drums and guitar and especially the basslines impresses me. This groove is now and then mixed whith clips from speaches by and interviews with Timothy. The topic of these speaches/interviews is mostly his view on the use of marujiana. The second 'song' is a little more freaked out. It's basically built up by Timothy talking. With his words there are now and then soundclips from various sources - singing priests, John Lennon, Rolling Stones and many more. The third and last 'song' is even more freaked out. Timothy is speaking about things I do not understand. I just don't think I'm on his level of counsciosness. Together with his voice, which has som effects on it, is some strange electronic sounds.

I find this record interesting. The first song is quite easy to get a grip on. A catchy groove anyone can like. The second and third song are more difficult to understand. All songs contains Timothy speaking and that's what this record is about I think - his words.

It's hard to review this record because it doesn't contain music the way we're used to know music. To really understand it you must of course listen to it. I'm glad to have this record in my collection - but don't blame me if you buy it and just shake your head in confusion.

Mixed blessings 15 Aug 2011
By Bodhi Heeren TOP 500 REVIEWER

This album is perhaps best known for the stellar cast of backing musicians: Stephen Stills and John B. Sebastian on guitars, the one and only Jimi Hendrix on bass and Buddy Miles behind the drums. At least they are the ones playing on the first track. Just a shame we have to endure Leary's immature and downright embarrasing rants, recorede during his ill-fated attempt to run for governor in California.

At this time - with countless lawsuits and some rather absurd jail-sentences (3o years for possesion of a minimum quantum of marihuana!!)hanging over his head - the spiritual aura seemed to have left him and he was becoming more and more a cheap media entertainment. The two other tracks fare somewhat better with some deeper acid-fueled musings. The title track actually a rather interesting sound collage with snippets by Beatles, Country Joe, Jefferson Airplane a.o..

Interesting but a far cry from the depth of his heydays as chronicled on Turn on Tune in Drop Out

You don't have to drop acid to love this record. 1 July 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Book of the Month Club billed this as "The musical equivalent of a full-blown LSD trip." That might be stretching it a bit, but then again, what exactly is an acid trip? This is Timothy Leary's elucidation of what was to be his 1968 CA gubernatorial campaign platform until then-guv Ronald Reagan had him imprisoned for marijuana possession, thereby nullifying Leary's eligibility for the candidacy. This record is what happens when one of the best minds of a generation gets together with Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles, and Jimi Hendrix (on bass!) for a little 21st century philosophy utilizing the cut and splice technology pioneered by the Beatles. The title track might just be the first example of wholesale sampling, incorporating bites of Allen Ginsberg, John Lennon, Indian cowmaid music and more. (Incidentally, I saw Leary speak in 1988. Armani suit and running shoes, he covered the whole stage, all wound up about the coming wave--that was my introduction to the Internet.)

Correcting information 8 Jun 2003
By "mentalic" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The CD album title is actually "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around" (not "Anything").

Also, the tracklist here doesn't display the right order of tracks, here's the right info:

1. Live and Let Live (13:56)
(Timothy Leary: rap; Stephen Stills: guitar; John Sebastian: guitar; Jimi Hendrix: bass; Buddy Miles: drums)

2. You Can Be Anyone This Time Around (9:03)

3. What Do You Turn On When You Turn On (6:03)

Have a mind blowing God experience! 16 Oct 2009
By James J. Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I just found a brand new reissued 180 gram vinyl copy to replace my old, well worn cassette tape!!! Zen! Listening to "Live and Let Live" makes you realize that if Leary hadn't been cut off at the knees by Ronald RayGun and become governor, California would have a huge budget surplus instead of being broke. Perhaps the world could have even been spared the Bush dynasty on some alternate political timeline. As for the all star jam, can you imagine the studio scene with Leary, Hendrix, Stills, Sebastian, and Miles tripping and grooving and rapping about changing the world. Far out, man. Oh, and don't discount Leary the scientist breaking down the human body into a chemically complex machine on "What Do You Turn On," and I defy you not to be inspired by the title track. Ommm, Shivaya!
