Product Description

No-one chooses to support the Boro; you are born to it.

Many in Middlesbrough might well tell you this, but it’s not entirely true. Some people did choose, even if success isn’t exactly a word associated with the team from Teesside. Maybe we were seduced by something; something mystical and intangible. I’m hoping it’s wasn’t all the chemicals in the atmosphere.

I couldn’t have chosen a better time to follow Middlesbrough Football Club, just as they struck out with new ambition, signing glamorous players and moving to a new stadium. There was no way I could know where this journey was going to take us.

But take us it did, and we were swept along on a ride like no other, down a path that was never straight or smooth, to places we would never have dreamt of. Not many people dream about places like Cardiff and Eindhoven, to be fair.

This is the story of Boro’s Golden Decade and a bit, from the emotional goodbye at Ayresome Park, through the cup finals and relegation fights, to the unlikely adventures of a Small Town in Europe that would take us to places no Boro fan had gone before…

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read for the fan 23 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This definitely appeals to the keen Boro fan, not sure none fans would be quite so keen. It serves as a reminder of probably the best times Middlesbrough FC have ever enjoyed and looking back now from 2012 are ever likely to enjoy. As a Boro fan going back to the mid 70's I found it short of historical context and background, but the writer admits that's not what the book is about - more a personal memoir from someone who came late to the club! Anyone who wants to relive the good times should buy this entertaining and light read.

5.0 out of 5 stars FOOTBALL NOSTALGIA 19 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is for the Middlesbrough supporter, who also happens to be an ex pat of the area. I lived in the area for a time, and then moved away to London some 25 years ago, but I still support them, and so does my son who remembers going to Ayresome Park to see many of the players that Christopher Combe writes about when he was 6 or 7. Each chapter startswith a reminder of what happened that year, which helps with orientation. The book is enjoyable, and encapsulates some of the aspects that make up Middlesbrough folklore and humour. Unless you are a real global football fan, I am not sure that you would get the enjoyment that a Boro fan would, though it does show the ups and downs of professional football in the 20/21st century.Good read, though limited clientele

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Nostalgia 20 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I just finished reading this book last night and I have to say that it was an enjoyable jaunt through the recent past of Middlesbrough Football club, written from a warm and unassuming perspective.

Having been brought into the Boro fold only a few years before the author, and also not having been born into it (my father was a rugby fan and I was brought up hundreds of miles from Middlesbrough), I could empathise with much of what was written about in the early stages of the book. It was interesting to read through the many pages of results and scorers and think 'oh, I was at the game...' and also to read of the pivotal moments that helped shape the recent history of The Boro, from someone else's point of view.
Although it's hard to believe that it's been more than five years since that Eindhoven UEFA Cup Final of 2006, it still seems like yesterday, as do many of the memories that this book brought back. Now that five years have passed, it's easy to look back and realise quite what what an amazing thing happened to the football club from the mid-90's, up until 2006, something that the author has managed to convey in this book.

In all honesty, this book is probably one for Boro fans only, but I am one, and I enjoyed it.

It is a well written piece, easy to read and a little piece of nostalgia for the recent past.

Thumbs up from me!
