By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Active Child is the working alias of Los Angeles-based composer
Pat Grossi. 'You Are All I See' must immediately take its place among
the year's finest releases. (What an abundance of riches 2011
has given us!) Mr Grossi's music has an extraordinary breadth of
vision; epic, opulent and incandescently uplifting, the ten tracks
in this collection unite a classical-prog sensibility with right-here
right-now rhythm. Our host truly understands the magic inherent in the
human voice and his voice is, indeed, magical (I understand he was a
choirboy in an earlier incarnation and it shows). It is an instrument which
soars untethered in the big blue realm of the sky. His sense of harmonic
structure, too, is simply outstanding. There is something almost hymn-like
permeating these densely-layered compositions which speaks to the spirit
as much as the intellect. The term "uplifting" barely defines it. I know
I've said it before and elsewhere but this music really does make the world
a better place and in these difficult times that's got to be a good thing!

The songs are largely slow to mid-paced in tempo but we do not require
greater acceleration than this to make our hearts beat faster. Take 'Way
Too Fast' as but one glorious example : the gently pulsing rhythm and
swooping vocal cadences, fractured here and there with subtle electronic
treatments, create an almost eerie alchemical ritual of sound. Mr Grossi
possesses a fearless and perfectly modulated falsetto which shapes the
well-crafted lyrics into patterns which seem almost liquid in character.
'Hanging On', too, employs shape-shifting choral accents to support the
remarkably soulful central vocal performance. It made my jaw go slack
with pure wonder and admiration (and we're talking a very big jaw here!)
'Johnny Belinda' is a sad tale plaintively told; a modern day requiem
but we must look to the opening track 'You Are All I See' to experience
the full breadth of Mr Grossi's singular vision; a Highland air of-sorts,
studded with harp-like arpeggios and Blade Runner synth intrusions, it brought
tears to this old Wolf's eyes and made the long night a less desolate place.

Simply Breathtaking.

Essential.

Gorgeous,near-perfect album 29 Aug 2011
By D - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This seems to be a "thing" lately, a phase that indie music is going through: dark, dreamy, shimmery music with an '80s synth sound. All the kids are doing it. Thing is, none of them are doing it half as well as Active Child. With its sultry instrumentation and choir-boy vocals, it's like an electronic-gospel-rock-opera for the 22nd century - current and futuristic, while borrowing from the past. This album is incredible; I'm so glad I discovered it. (Another great Amazon recommendation - way to keep earning my dollars, Amazon!)

I do have to say that I have some favorites - See Thru Eyes, High Priestess, Ancient Eye - and love its ethereal moments better than the more straightforward pop/R&B influenced songs. But that said, the album works as a whole, and I like every song. Definitely one of my favorite recent albums, and in a time of very good music.

Beautiful! 6 Jan 2012

I grew up in the 80s, and I must admit this album startles my nostalgic appreciation for those sounds and styles. It exceeds that genre entirely however with a sophisticated and modern polish. The vocals/singing and synthy quality might be compared to a stripped-down M83 with a harp.
Lovely, light ivy... 28 Mar 2012
By Angie - Published on Amazon.com
YOU ARE ALL I SEE is whispery goodness the whole way through and while M83 fans may particularly be interested, anyone who loves beautiful, ethereal music will find themselves falling in love with this. It is such a lovely album that sometimes there's almost too much loveliness to handle.

Even though I mention M83, there is really no one else's voice I can compare to what gently radiates off of Active Child's album. You could spend your whole time listening to YOU ARE ALL I SEE with your eyes closed and find yourself transported to another world where stress and worry just seep out of your soul.

"Hanging On" is haunting and swirls around your insides while "See Thru Eyes" is vulnerable and loving and very very dreamy with an A-ha 80s sweep to it. "Ivy" would be an awesome song to feature during a magical movie scene where two people first realize how strongly they feel about each other. It will raise the goosebumps on your arms when you hear it each and every time. "Ancient Eye" and "Johnny Belinda" are mystical revelations that may have you checking your feet to see if they are still on the floor.

Every song on here has its own power, but the ones I like most, the ones that really got to me are the ones I mentioned and they are the kinds of things you don't easily forget. YOU ARE ALL I SEE is hard to pin down to one style or sound, but it is as gorgeous as a butterfly or a deer that starts too easily if you approach it too fast. Take your time getting to know this wondrous album.
