Shane Filan has come a long way from the early days of Westlife where they were regarded as a typical Boy Band/Mixed Groups of it's time and every other band (eg. Cliff & The Shadows, Herman's Hermits, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Boyzone etc.) period since Pop music began commercially in the 1950s. However sometimes out of the group the lead singer or a group member become highly successful in their own right. Shane Filan has the beginnings of being in the making of such a successful Artist judging by the high standard of music on this Album YOU AND ME.

Shane Filan's vocals are finely tuned to the individual song, particularly the ballad tracks where he sings them with conviction.

Shane has become a Singer/Songwriter as on all the songs on this Album and I understand by Shane Filan's interviews I've seen on youtube that his lyrics are inspired by his personal life. And the sentiments are clearly positively featured on all the songs. The whole album sounds like Folk/Country/Pop with a 'concept' flavour. Each are arranged in such a way that they are 'catchy' and the music tempo works extremely well. Shane has taken a new direction musically away from the Westlife style of songs. An artist has to progress in life to grow in his/her craft.

The songs:
1. Everything to me: This is a jolly crowd pleasing song, though personally it's not a strong track compared to the majority of songs on this CD.
2. About you: A much stronger song in arrangement.
3. All you need to know: This sounds like a 1970s ballad folk-pop ballad with orchestra in the background. Shane extends his vocals on this one. Flawless. A terrific song.
4. Knee deep in my heart: A nice uptempo folk-country sound. Uplifting.
5. One of these days: Catchy tune with meaningful lyrics.

I was pleasanltly surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. Though I'm a huge Westlife fan, I've never really liked an album in its entirety. There a few tracks that have a similar sound, but at least they're all good, well-sung tracks. I like that he experiments with different sounds outside of the typical Westlife style. Going solo has allowed room for Shane to grow and change as an artist. I feel proud of Mr. Filan (not that I know him lol) for writing on almost every track on the album. He's come a long way!

The opening track "Everything To Me," which is also his first single, is one of the weakest songs in my mind. It's a happy song, but the way the chorus goes just doesn't sound right. "About You" is a much better, stronger track and single. It has the classic Westlife sound that people are used to hearing. "Knee Deep In My Heart" and "Baby Let's Dance" are fun, upbeat songs. They're quite pleasant and are among my favourites off the album. I love the raw sound of the acoustic versions on the extra disc as well as songs such as "Always Tomorrow" and "All You Need To Know," which are more toned down and really showcase Shane's vocals. "In The End" is just a top tune, great pop song. "Just The Way You Love Me" is the opening track on Disc 2, and for some reason which I can't really explain, I love it so much. I think it's the way he sings the chorus that kinda makes me swoon. Overall, I think it's a solid pop album. I'm glad I got the Deluxe Edition. I just hope his solo career gets more exposure because the music is definitely worthy.

My thoughts are a little mixed on this one but this is purely because a lot of the songs sound very samey! However I can't fault Shane's vocal ability, he has a lovely voice and I really enjoy listening to this album. It's very catchy, happy and gives you a lift when you listen to it. I think it's a great start to his solo career and if it was my first album I'd feel very proud. I also note that Shane has co-wrote most of the album which is nice to see. I also like the fact that he has stepped away from the typical ballad stereotype and he has more of a folk feel about him. Exciting times ahead and I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

if your into melody and fine pop then id recommend. Sometimes the angst that Westlife churned out in the later years tended to be a bit of a put off for me at least. This album is a good departure of predominantly up beat and catchy songs. I think its too easy to be dismissive of this type of genre, however not every one wants deep thought and trendy. Shane has a quality voice and it fits very well . If I had one piece of feedback it would be to have a greater change to rhythm and time structures across the songs as some tracks feel similar. That aside, Well done, I wish him success in his solo career and I look forward to the next album

This didn't seem to be readily available as a release in the US... which is why I chose to order the album from Amazon.co.uk. I was sold after seeing/hearing the 'campfire' acoustic "Baby Let's Dance" on youtube. Some great music, style, and instrumentation (Nashville influences, perhaps)... I don't see myself growing tired of this one.
