4.0 out of 5 stars Completely overlooked & rather interesting., 19 Feb 2003
I first heard of Scala on the 'Wow&Flutter' compilation of Too Pure/City Slang/Thrill Jockey labels from 1998- which put this alongside artists such as Schneider TM, Mouse on Mars, Tortoise, Calexico & Techno Animal. The song Remember How to Breathe had everything- sounding like a 21st century Nico fronting Suicide & AFX Twin: automated electronic rhythms (in repetition), female vocals from the singer who used to be in Seefeel, full of ennui & suggesting altered states & bursts of overloaded electronics that people like Radiohead & Ladytron would sound like a few years later (albeit, somewhat diluted). Imagine Laetia Sadier from Stereolab fronting AR Kane on a minimal Replex/Warp tip...I eventually picked this album up on a promo in a 2nd hand record shop & the rest is as great as Remember How to Breathe; for anyone who likes the idea of an electronic-Nico or a female-Suicide, this is the album for you: and one that appears to have been completely overlooked
