Book Description

Another intense and uncompromising novel from the critically acclaimed author of BEFORE I DIE.

Product Description

If someone hurts your sister and you're any kind of man, you seek revenge, right?

If your brother's accused of a terrible crime but says he didn't do it, you defend him, don't you?

When Mikey's sister claims a boy assaulted her, his world begins to fall apart.

When Ellie's brother is charged with the offence, her world begins to unravel.

When Mikey and Ellie meet, two worlds collide.

This is a brave and unflinching novel from the bestselling author of Before I Die. It's a book about loyalty and the choices that come with it. But above all it's a book about love.

Truth or Loyalty ? 17 Dec 2010
By A. Rose TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a brave, honest and emotional approach to many issues of modern life, almost a Romeo and Juliet story of a kind of forbidden love between Mikey and Ellie. Mikey is poor, living in a council flat with his alcoholic mother and two sisters. Karen, the elder sister, is fifteen and traumatised to the point of never leaving the flat after a rape, and Holly is eight with normal demands of the school run and needing meals making for her, all of which is falling to Mikey. He's barely able to hold down his chef/waiter job with his problem sisters, useless alcoholic mother, no food in the house and social services at the door. Ellie on the other hand is bright and of a wealthy family whose brother has been accused of rape. Ellie's loyalties are strongly with her brother who is denying the rape and she wants to believe him so much. The only problem is the fact that she was present in the house at the time of the alleged rape and she knows his story doesn't add up.

Mikey is devious in the way he meets Ellie and when she realises what his motives are she is understandably upset and refuses to see him again. There are one or two sub-plots going on around these two main characters, all based on problem relationships which in turn colour and strengthen their judgements and emotions.

This is a really well put together book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. There is no glitz and glamour - it's raw and emotional. This is the first book I've read of Jenny Downham's but having read other reviews I shall certainly give Before I Die a go and will look out for her other books in the future.

You Against Me 1 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
You Against Me is a story about a poor girl and a rich boy, Karyn and Tom. When Karyn gets drunk at Toms party, the boy she's had a crush on for years, something happens - they either have sex, or Karyn gets raped, and Ellie, Toms younger sister was the only witness around. With the day of the trial steadily approaching she needs to get her story straight..
The ripple effects of Toms party are portrayed through the eyes of Ellie and Mickey (Karyn's older brother). Mickey is hardly coping, he can't bear to hear what happened and is desperate for revenge, and Ellie is confused to say the least. So when Mickey meets Ellie a plan forms in his head, a plan to make sure that Tom is found guilty once and for all. However that plan is halted when he falls in love with Ellie, and as Ellie becomes more in love with Mickey, she's not sure what the right thing to do is anymore. Defend her brother, or defend herself?
Mickey is living in a council flat with his alcoholic mother, depressed and scared Karyn, and neglected Holly his eight year old sister, and as the council workers visits become more frequent, Mickey really does try to change things around. He gets his mum up every day, takes Holly to school and tries to look after ungrateful Karyn, all whilst juggling a job as a chef and his ever increasing relationship with Ellie.
Ellie lives in a house with her timid and cowardly mother, her unloving father and Tom, scary yet sweet her only older brother, Tom. Ellie's father is expecting Ellie to study all day every day, be and look perfect and stand up in court and get her brother cleared of all charges, whereas Ellie does the opposite..

And then there's the trial..

JD is an exceptional writer, every so often I read a book that really does get me thinking, and empathising with the protagonists, and You Against Me is one of those books, that will stay with you forever.

You Against Me, is a wonderful book that will really affect you, I felt that the characters were likeable especially Holly. This book is a real page turning, tear jerking, heart wrenching read, that is amazing, perfect for teenagers.

If you loved Before I Die by Jenny Downham, and Before I Fall By Lauren Oliver, then you will love this.

Astounding.

A beautifully sensitive page turner of 2 families affected by the same crime, told by the teens who are affected by the upheaval in their household.
I'm guessing considering the teens in the tale are 16 and 18, this is meant for the teen market but don't let that put you off if you're older.
The characters are believable
A very enjoyable page turner that I found hard to put down.
