Book Description

15 Sep 2000
Yoshitoshi was one of the most influential and prolific woodblock print artists of Meiji Japan. This book presents his masterpiece, "Tsuki hyakushi" ("One Hundred Aspects of the Moon"). The series was begun in 1885 and completed just before the artist's death in 1892. It was wildly popular even as it was being produced. New designs were eagerly awaited, with editions selling out before dawn on the day of publication. Each one of the 100 images in the series is shown in full colour and nearly life size. Opposite each design a commentary gives the story behind the picture. These wonderful tales form a panorama of Japanese history and legend that resonates with the richness and subtlety of traditional Japanese culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book. 8 Nov 2001

Format:Hardcover
Hotei Publishing from Leiden (The Netherlands) is currently IMHO the number one publisher regarding Japanese arts.

This book is no exception and lives up to the standard one has come to expect from them. You will find plenty of background information regarding the artist Yoshitoshi, as well as lots of large (full-page) colour reproductions of his "One Hundred Aspects Of The Moon".

The idea on which the prints are based did impress me very much. It is not ukiyo-e depicting "just" the moon, but showing scenes, happenings, people, etc. under the moonlight. Even though my expectations were very high before I got my copy of this publication, I was very much positively surprised.
