Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Oh no! It looks like your grandad was right--things really were better in the old days. Well, they were if you liked 2-D platform games, anyway, and Yoshi's Island is indisputably one of the best ever made.

In a laudable attempt not to rehash its immediate forebear Yoshi's Island goes back in time to recount the touching story of the various yoshis' attempts to unite Baby Mario with his parents. For the first time ever in a Mario game you don't actually control the Italian plumber-to-be but instead his dinosaur pal, who has the curious ability to eat his enemies and then immediately turn them into eggs which he can then fling at more enemies and/or politicians.

Since Yoshi isn't particularly fast and can float in mid-air for a few seconds after making a jump, the whole dynamics of the normal Mario gameplay have changed, but the same incredible attention to detail and endless imagination that mark all of Nintendo's best efforts are still here in full effect. In fact they're joined this time, after the rather plain looking prequel, by some wonderful pastel-shaded graphics that were jaw-dropping when the game was originally released in 1995 and still manage to impress now.

As with the other Super Mario Advance titles this game also contains a four-player version of the original Mario Bros. arcade game, making it even more of a bargain than it already was. --David Jenkins

5.0 out of 5 stars Best platform game ever!, 23 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Yoshi's island was a game for the SNES about 5 years ago.It was the sequel to the magnificent Super Mario World, and to many, (including me) thought it betterd the SNES smash hit. Why? Because Nintendo have come up with a brilliat game with memromble chracters, a game packed with quirky ideas that are bound to amaze you, and some of the most beuatiful graphics ever to grace the 16-bit consle. Now, its back on the GBA looking better than ever.
The general plot is this. Yoshi comes accross Baby Mario, whose brother has been kidnapped from the evil wizard Kamek. Its up to Yoshi and friends to guide baby Mario across perilous paths and save his brother.During the game, Yoshi can turn into different forms such as a car or a helicopter, for a short time. You'll soon get used to the controls and you'll be happily fireing eggs at enimies in no time.

Overall, this game is absoulutly brilliant. If you are a GBA owner, this is a must-have. If you're not, its worth buying one for the game alone. The only downside is that its slightly short and that its another Mario GBA game with Mario Brothers in it.Again. But these minor niggles won't be noticed by the overall brilliance of the game.Buy it. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoshi meets mario, sweeeet..., 24 April 2003
I bought this game with my GBA SP, and I'm so pleased I did. Yoshis Island has all the perfect aspects of a 2D platform game. The controls are fantastic, superb gameplay, and backed up with jaw dropping pastel shaded graphics. One word of warning though, without a backlight or one of those external lights for the GBA, this will be difficult to play.
I've only had the game for a fortnight and I'm half way through world 6 (there are six worlds)so it's not long, but it can be hard at places. Figuring out what to do is easy, it's just that doing it is harder.
I don't think there's much more I can say about this, it's just must buy for anyone with a GBA (/SP). But, the bosses are soooooo easy, getting to them is the hardest thing.
Although it is a short game, there's plenty of reply value as you can go back and get 100 points on each level.
Your GBA game colllection is not complete without this game. Is there going to be a Mario Advance 4?

5.0 out of 5 stars All hail Yoshi!, 15 Oct 2005
By Adaz (Paxton) - See all my reviews
This is the best platform game, no the best game on GBA. Basically the storyline is, a stork is on its way delivering baby mario and baby luigi to their parents (don't ask why) when Kamek the magikoopa comes and steals baby luigi, while baby mario falls onto yoshis island. He falls onto Yoshi, and him and the other yoshis decide to take him to his parents, but Bowsers servant Kamek is always trying to steal him. The storyline isn't important though. This game rocks! Yoshi can eat his enemies or through eggs at them, and he can turn into a train, a car,a sub and other vehicles. When yoshi gets hit baby mario falls off his back and floats around in a little bubble until you pick him up again or you run out of time and kameks henchmen come and get him. There are loads of bad guys from shy guys to koopa paratroopas, and loads of bosses including a giant frog that swallows you and a massive black raven called Raphael. There are 6 worlds, 6 levels on each (not including the 2 boss levels on each world). Each level is different or has a different feature, and also theres 2 secret levels on each world. Also theres a game of mario bros on the cart. Overall I'd give this game 9 and a half/10.
