2.0 out of 5 stars Good for river ideas but getting very dated, 10 May 2000
By A Customer
This book gives a good range of rivers throughout Yorkshire with a good range of grades. If you are looking for ideas of rivers to paddle this is good. If you want a good guide with up to date access information and good river descriptions I'd skip it. The descriptions of rivers are torturously detailed and long, telling you an exact prescribed line round every bend. With changes in river features over time, and an ever-increasing problem with keeping concentration to the end of the description, this is not very good. If you want to know rivers access and egress points, and grades this is a good book for you. If you want sensible, modern river descriptions look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure how upto date it is, 24 April 2006

The book is easy to read and because of its size would be easy to carry with you on your journey. It gives a clear map of where the rivers are in Yorkshire at the beginning, and also supplies a detailed map of each river in each relevant section. The river descriptions (or itinerary as the book calls it) are detailed but you don't need to read these to get a feel for the rivers as the general description at the beginning of each section, including grade and remarks, are helpful in understanding the river before setting off.

My only real problem with the book (apart from being scared to death about Weil's Disease at the beginning) is the fact that the information could be out of date. The book looks like it has only been printed once, 14 years ago, and the telephone numbers given to contact local authorities etc. don't have the '1' in the dialling code. This in itself gives the impression that it is rather old. That said, it gives you good ideas of places to go and gives decent information about what it will be like when you get there. However I wouldn't depend too much on the information provided about parking etc. I am yet to see if the information about the access and agress points are correct - one of the main reasons for buying this book!

If you want good ideas of places to go then I would buy it. However, if you are after up-to-date information then maybe forget it
