Book Description

1 April 2010
Three South Yorkshire friends, all on the cusp of 40, fall pregnant at the same time following a visit to an ancient fertility symbol. For Helen, it's a dream come true, although her husband is not as thrilled about it as she had hoped. Not only wrestling with painful ghosts of the past, Helen has to deal with the fact that her outwardly perfect marriage is crumbling before her eyes. For Janey, it is an unmitigated disaster as she has just been offered the career break of a life-time. And she has no idea either how it could possibly have happened, seeing as she and her ecstatic husband George were always so careful over contraception. For Elizabeth, it is mind-numbing, because she knows people like her shouldn't have children. Damaged by her dysfunctional childhood and emotionally lost, she not only has to contend with carrying a child she doubts she can ever love, but she also has to deal with the return to her life of a man whose love she must deny herself. Heart-warming, up-lifting, tear-jerking and lovely, THE YORKSHIRE PUDDING CLUB is the story of how three women find themselves empowered by unexpected pregnancy. How it revitalises one woman's tired marriage, strengthens another's belief in herself and brings love and warmth to a cold and empty life.

More About the Author

Milly Johnson was born, raised and still lives in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. As well as being an author of 10 published novels, a book of short stories and a novella, she is also a copywriter for the greetings card industry, a joke-writer, a columnist, after dinner speaker, poet and a sometimes BBC radio presenter.

She wrote her first book 'Judith in the Land of Buns, Biscuits and Cakes' whilst still at school - an opus that remains tragically unpublished. It was only when a ex-boss called Barnsley 'A Joke Town' that she resolved to write a book about Barnsley folk and to show that the town is actually quite a nice, friendly place to grow up and live in.

She writes about love, life, friendships, rather nice food and a little bit of the magic that sometimes crops up in real life.

When not writing, she is usually shouting at her two teenage sons to put things AWAY, watching Jeremy Kyle or being walked by her Eurasier dog Teddy, who also has a column in the local paper and gets paid more than she does.

Milly's website is www.millyjohnson.co.uk. She is on Twitter @millyjohnson and FB www.facebook.com/milly.johnson1

About the Author

Five-foot-tall Milly Johnson is a half Barnsley, half Glaswegian writer of greetings cards, novels and shopping lists featuring gin and buns. When not writing she is either reading, learning Italian, mixing with the Yorkshire glitterati, getting up the council's nose about a Dodworth Road Pedestrian Crossing or ironing school clothes. She lives with her two boys and a quartet of mad animals near her Mam and Dad in the middle of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puddy Great 6 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
I approached this book fairly cynically, I had to admit, but it was surprisingly easy to slip into and I loved the author's fresh and quite unusual voice. I enjoyed the twists and turns of a very slick plot and the beautiful balancing of Janey and George's 'penances'. There was obvious affection in the writing for the characters and the setting, which endeared me greatly to the author (yes I'm from Yorkshire originally!), and I do look forward very much to her next offering, a chapter of which was supplied in the back. I was expecting a sequel - but was surprised with a quite different story which sounds as much, if not more, up my own personal street. A worthy first novel and one that deserves the rather 'lovely' reviews (to quote just about everyone) that I have found in the press and on the net. Well done!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Joy! 17 Feb 2007
By Carron
Format:Paperback
I confess babies and motherhood books etc don't really do it for me but I read this after a friend raved about it to me.I was as surprised as anyone to find myself reading 'just one more page' before I put it down (I got to a third of the book just 'reading one more page') What can I say about it? Refined older chick-lit. The pregnancy thing didn't get in the way for me because the real story is about friendships between characters that talk just the way I talk to my own friends - and I feel as if I would know them if I ever met them in the street (most odd!), so many lines that made me laugh out loud, storylines that made me physically sob (even odder for me as a hard old childless cynic!), an ending that sent me to bed smiling like a moron - and the first chapter of the author's second book in the back that had me searching on the net to find out when that's due out (and I couldn't find it - HELP!) A book that was a very lovely surprise to me and I would highly recommend it, a box of chocolates and a weekend with the door shut and the phone off the hook to enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, lovely, lovely! 5 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
I have noticed on other reviews that the word lovely keeps cropping up in association with this book and now I have read it, I can see why. I enjoyed the book so very much - but the ending is what will make me recommend it so heavily. I cannot remember sobbing so hard at a book in a long time. I won't spoil it by saying if they were happy tears or sad tears, but it affected me greatly.

Just lovely!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Give it a go.. 9 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I know we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I often do. This book goes to show how wrong we can be! I would normally have never picked this book up based on the cover and even the title. This came as part of a multi-pack of 10 summer reads and after reading the favourable reviews on here, i decided to read this one first. Wow, what a book! I was hooked from the first page and loved each of the three women the book is centered around. This story feels like a great big warm hug and is absolutely perfect for cosying up on the sofa on a rainy afternoon with a big mug of tea. Milly Johnson is a big talent and I cannot wait to read her other offerings.

This is one of those rare and wonderful books which you cannot put down once you start to read, and can't bare to finish.

If you are, or have ever been, pregnant then you will definitely identify with the ups and downs the characters go through, but it is so much more than just about pregnancy. You really care about the characters, and what happens to them in their various relationships.

I only wish there was a sequel to tell us of their experiences of dealing with their babies, toddler groups, starting school etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the afection between friends in this book 21 Jan 2010
By Ruthdac
Format:Paperback
This is an easy read for those who are expecting and those who aren't. Its the story of 3 friends who get pregnant at the same time but have very different experiences. The story gets a bit graphic at times and does not attempt to hide some of the traumas that women go through during pregnancy and birth but, of course, it's all worth it in the end. Definitely worth a read

This book is funny, sad, moody, hilarious, heart wrenching, loopy, thoughtful, wonderful. I don't do chick lit but the way Milly Johnson weaves a spell of both plot and character had me enthralled. Click buy it now and get this book. I wish I was from Barnsley. I can't wait for the film!

5.0 out of 5 stars More, more, more!!! 26 July 2010
By Allyc
Format:Paperback
This is quite honestly the best book I have ever read! Read the next 3 in quick succession and am desperate for milly to write more. Her style of writing makes her novels quite adictive, she says it as it is with no frills and you can really relate to the characters. I defy you to say you don't know of someone that is just like one of her characters! Truly adictive!
