I'm currently revising for my English A2 and bought this book to help me. I really like revision guides and wouldnt have got a good AS grade without the help of my Tess guide. However, this one is pretty rubbish. It doesn't have the poems in, so you don't know where the quotes are that are analysed. It tends to just give a glossary of Old English words rather than actually analysing anything. Some of the poems aren't even explained - I have real trouble with "Nocturnal upon St Lucy's Day" and the guide doesn't help at all so was forced to google the meaning. Also slightly concerning is the sentence structure, grammar and phrasing; a lot of it doesn't make sense and it seems like the editor tried to make it sound more pretentious but failed. Also some of the points it makes are a bit dubious (ie for Mistress Going to Bed, a poem about how Donne tries to convince a woman to sleep with him, the context suggests that she is 'just as sexually enthusiastic as him' even though the whole poem is about him desperately trying to convince her to give in). I feel that it was a waste of money and by googling the poems individually I'd have got a lot more info.

Poetry explained 5 April 2006
By A Customer
I had problems understanding John Donne's poetry, but York notes explains what they are all about, definately helped me get my A. As it includes themes, analysis, critical approaches and the author biography, I found it a very useful guide.

It's regrettable that the author of these notes appears not to be very fond of John Donne's work. Some of the notes are useful, but the "well, that wasn't very successful, was it?" tone becomes excessively irritating. Especially if one isn't "doing" Donne for A-level, but is instead just wanting to deepen one's knowledge and understanding of much-loved poems.
