3.0 out of 5 stars Moll Flanders: Novel, but not really!, 20 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Moll Flanders is our first person narrator throughout this tale of the subversive world of the gentility. Daniel Defoe (a man) attempts to use a female as his focaliser, and consequently the narrative lacks lucidity and conviction.NP// Virginia Woolf exposes the nature of prose as a patriachal medium, contrived by men for men. She also points out that as women became more literate, the sentence developed a feminine style. The main perpertrator being Jane Austen. The characteristics of a feminine narrative are loose conjunctions of clauses and lateral thinking,as opposed to the male style of goal orientated tightly structured sentences.NP// One must take intoi account the embryonic nature of Moll Flanders, an early novel when "novels" didn't really exist, hence the lack of chapter segregation.
