Having owned & used this bench regularly for nearly two years I can confirm that it is a very good quality product, & a good choice for a home gym. It is large, heavy, very stable, robustly built, & easily handles far in excess of the loads that most home weight trainers will place on it.

Regarding some of the negative reviews, although the barbell support posts are fairly close together, they are farther apart than many home benches, and the dimensions work well with a traditional exercise bar (ie 5 foot long, 1 inch diameter). When using a bar of this type (as the vast majority of home trainees are likely to be doing) the posts sit towards the outside edges of the knurling, ie alongside the user's hands. Clearly everyone's ergonomics will be different but for myself at 5'11'' the posts are close to the hands but not sufficiently so as to be a problem. Incidentally, if the position of the posts were widened, little clearance, if any, would be left between the posts & the weight plates positioned on the barbell. This could cause difficulty if replacing the barbell at the end of a heavy set required very precise co-ordination.

It's also worth noting that for the home user the 540 has the significant benefit of versatility. The seat incline is adjustable and the bench can be folded to save space. The tall posts allow squats to be performed, & it can be paired with a lat pulldown attachment (although not folded at the same time) providing a platform on which the whole body to be trained effectively.

If the user wants a bench with very widely positioned support posts I would recommend they buy an Olympic bench (& the Olympic bar & weight plates to go with it). However, if they are specifically interested in this type of product they are likely to either have a particular interest in performing a very heavy bench press, or to have progressed well beyond the level of most home weight trainers & are likely to own a separate squat rack or similar.

Finally, I would recommend this bench to anyone looking for a qood quality, heavy duty bench on which to perform a wide range of exercises in a home gym environment. Understand what it is & how it does it. Decide what you actually require from a bench, & select the product that will suit you best.

Does the job, but! 27 Mar 2009
Hi
I bought this weight bench 6 weeks ago, and I love having in there. It is really well built and sturdy. The only down side is if you are tall, your feet will drag on the leg exersizes, so if you are 5 10 or more, go and try one in a shop first! . Also for these leg exercizes , if you use the vinyl weights, you wont be able to fit enough weight on!

York bench b540 21 Feb 2009
I'm very happy with this bench.
I needed a bench for at home as I didn't have the time to go to the gym everyday also I needed one that could fold away because I live in a small flat. It is very sturdy and well made and I would definately recommend It to anyone looking for a good home bench. It folds away between the two back posts but does stick out a bit but for the price and build its Great!.
I use a 1" width bar at the mo but this bench will take a 2" olympic bar that most gyms use.

Amazing Bench
Very sturdy, well build piece of equipment. I am 186cm tall and this bench is just perfect. You will not drag your feet on the floor as you can regulate the lower seat. Read more

Bench
This is a starting bench, it does the job and to a good level too. The bench is easily adjusted, and the rack can quickly be converted into a squat rack. Read more

Exactly what I wanted.
Seen as I'm poor and have little space to play with I bought this bench mainly due to the fact that it folds away and doesn't break the bank. Read more

Well built, poor York customer service.
Bought this bench around two weeks ago and I'll echo what most others are saying about it being a decent bit of kit, very sturdy, but again - the width of the bench press stand can... Read more

Great Product
This is a very solid bench and the folding mechanism is very easy to use. I can see why it may not be for the taller person but for someone of my height 5'6 it is the perfect size. Read more

This bench is vastly superior to many home benches in that it is VERY sturdy, solidly build and durable. Read more

Highly Recommended
The bench is very solid, pretty simple and fun to assemble, and does everything I need a weights bench to do. It's great if you want an alternative to buying a gym membership. Read more
