Great cross trainer - everything you'd need, 8 Mar 2008
This review is from: York X201 Elliptical (Sports)
I bought this while Amazon were selling it at a very competitive price (nearly half price), so for the money I paid it was an absolute bargain.
I had done a lot of research as it's a lot of money to pay for something online that you can't try out. My friend supplies fitness equipment and recommended York and this model, and I can understand why. Apparently the cheaper trainers are okay but not as sturdy, smooth or reliable as York, which is what lead me to buy this.
Putting it together is a bit of a chore, though it took my partner a leisurely two hours to get it all together. It looks really great and although it's quite big I imagine it is more compact than other trainers. The blue look is very nice too!!
I've put it in our conservatory where it will stay - although it has wheels it is cumbersome and heavy to move. I'd originally envisaged moving it to the lounge and use it while watching TV, but I'll have to leave it in one place!
When you're on it it works like a dream - you can use the programs if you like, I think there are about 12 in total and you can do fitness tests and all sorts, but to be honest I just get on it, set the time, put it on the easiest setting and press start. It's so easy and quick to use, and thi is such an important factor. The display doesn't light up or beep to say you've finished, nor is there a bottle holder, but at the price I paid it doesn't bother me in the slightest. You can see the display fine whether in daylight or with a light on.
The trainer does wobble a little when in use, but this may only be because I've got in on carpet rather than a had surface mat, which I may look at buying.
Another thing worth mentioning is that apart from my heavy breathing, the trainer is absolutely silent. I could never find anything which confirmed this while researching, so it's good to know.
All in all if you're looking for a solid, professional cross trainer I can't imagine you'll get one any better than this York one, and with some bargain prices out there you won't be disappointed.

Pleasantly surprised, 23 Jan 2008
This review is from: York X201 Elliptical (Sports)
Having read a few reviews of york equipment, I was concerned that I may have problems with the user manual. I needn't have worried - the manual was excellent and the parts well defined. A nice touch was that all the small items such as bolts and washers etc were located on a clearly numbered board - take note flat pack furniture manufacturers this beats those gigantic bags of bits you send out. One and a half hours after a very promp receipt, the thing was up and raring to go.
The only previous experience I have of home fitness kit such as this was an old Tunturi rowing machine, and that seemed to have been designed to resist nuclear explosion. The York X201 isn't quite up to that standard, howver it seems to be a well built item that's very stable in use. If I have any criticism it is that a lit display would be useful as would an audible bleep at the end of pogramme sessions. However, it would be rather churlish to emphasise these omissions on what is a very price competitive machine.
The only thing I need now is a new pair of lungs and a cure for wobbly legs, but that is not the fault of this great little cross trainer........

Excellent piece of equipment, 29 Dec 2008
This review is from: York X201 Elliptical (Sports)
Bought this for myself and my girlfriend for Christmas, got round to assemble it Boxing Day.
Assembly is very simple, I'm pretty good at assembling things like this and I did it by myself in about an hour. The main base and flywheel has a fair bit of weight to it so you might need some help to carefully remove it from the box. Instructions are straightforward and as mentioned in other reviews all the bits needed are vacuum packed onto a piece of card and all numbered. I would advise that you get yourself some extra tools (the tools provided are the usual standard for self assembly items. My socket wrench with a 13mm bit was very handy for most of the assembly and I'd advise everyone to use one).
Although the machine has a set of wheels on one end it is still pretty cumbersome to lift one end up to drag it around so take note of the dimensions and pick a suitable place to use it.
Once in operation it is almost silent - a TV on normal volume would cover up the sound this thing makes.
The training programmes are excellent and work exactly as they should and you can see your progress on screen. Resistance is increased and decreased automatically as you go or you can easily adjust it as you are moving.
I read in another review that the programs can be done in 5 minutes, this is incorrect as you can set the total time you want to train for and it will spread the resistance levels over the duration of that time. This can also be done for distance.
I can't comment about how tough the resistance is - I'm only just getting back into shape and I found them really tough to blast out more than a few minutes at a time at high speeds. At a more leisurely fat-burning pace 20-30 minutes will still offer a good workout for anyone.
The machine feels very solid - I weight almost 15 stone and it doesn't feel like I'm putting any strain at all on the moving parts of the machine.
Very satisfied with my purchase :-)
