5.0 out of 5 stars Great purchase, excellent machine 11 Jun. 2009
    By wolfcub
This product is an excellent buy at the price and I am exceedingly pleased at my purchase. I bought this over an year ago and have used it consistently since then. It is very well made and lets you get on with your exercise.

    Pros:
    * Very sturdy in my experience. Once put together properly, the equipment is rock solid. The equipment parts are heavy for a reason; you'll appreciate the sturdiness once you start using it. The handlebar movement was smooth and fluid, and more importantly, has continued to remain so.
    * Quite feature rich as detailed above. Seat can be adjusted for height and reach. Footplate can be fixed in one of two positions. Resistance levels can be adjusted. Hand pulse sensors to monitor heart rate. Recovery mode to indicate how well your heart rate recovers in a 60-second period at end of exercising.
    * LCD control at the front is really well laid out. The screen is split into a top and bottom section. The bottom section shows rpm, time, distance, calories and pulse. It shows a running count of time, distance and calories which ticks over at 99, unless you're using it a target mode where it counts down to zero from the target. The top section cycles through each of rpm, time, distance etc at 10-15 sec intervals. The LCD panel probably was the single biggest factor in motivating me to keep working out - the fact that I can visually see how much effort I've put in.
    * Silent! If put together properly, it works without creaks and aches. After several months of use, it did start creaking once, but application of oil at the creaking joints and it has stayed silent since.
    * Quite compact for a crosstrainer. The base of the crosstrainer bars jut out a bit during use, but not by much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Quality and amazing amazon discounted price. 28 Mar. 2011
    By Alan
    Verified Purchase
The manual must have been re-written since the 3 star review in January 2008 by Shilen. Putting the XC530 together takes a couple of hours but it is fairly straight forward and I found the manual easy to follow.

Pros: a Very sturdy piece of equipment. A lot of home gym equipment is cheap useless rubbish. The XC530 is well above average and is amazing value at half price from amazon. It has a good sized display showing target time, target distance, target calories, target heart rate, recovery fitness test. Does not need to be plugged into the mains.

Cons: Display is not back lit. I can only describe the other cons by reference to a similar cross trainer/bike, the Reebok Edge Combo Exercise Bike and Cross Trainer. If you want some built in exercise programs, which automatically vary the resistance of the cross trainer, then take a look at the Reebok. If you want to save a couple of hundred pounds and have some thing which looks to me to be just as good (but without the exercise programs) then buy the York CX530.

If you are a bit of a gym equipment novice (like me) then I would strongly suggest you get down to your nearest sports equipment shop and try a few of the cross trainers and bikes. Do you really need this two in one or would a dedicated bike or cross trainer be best for you?

This is what you want to look for: Front wheel vs back wheel. When the wheel is on the front the walking motion is more of a stride, compared to a wheel on the back, which introduces slightly more of an up and down motion. So a back wheel is good when doubling up as a bike, if that's what you want. A bigger wheel will give you more length in your stride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality piece of equipment 19 May 2010
I received my XC530 this morning. Ordered this model as I wanted to buy a cross trainer but my wife wanted a cycle. This was the best of both worlds and whilst I expected a compromise I was surprised to find that this model works brilliantly as either so we will both be pleased.
The worst part was trying to get the box in the house on my own - this thing is heavy so best to open the box and take it piece by piece.
Layed out the pieces and the instructions. All the nuts and bolts are shrink wrapped to a piece of card with no's on it so you can't go wrong with them and the parts are clearly marked as left or right where necessary. The tools you need are also included which is a great touch. Instructions were very easy to follow and it took me a little over 1.5 hours to do it on my own. I could have done it quicker but I took my time with it and enjoyed putting it together.
All of the pieces were absolutely rock solid - very well made and fitted where they were meant to go without any problems. No forcing or fiddling was necessary at all.
Once up I tried it out. The tension knob works very well. Make sure this is set to the lowest setting when you first get on or you may have trouble getting the pedals to go in the right direction until you are used to them. At the lowest setting, however, everything is easy to work and you can get used to the motion, which is very smooth and not at all awkward. Even in cycle mode the pedal motion seems fine. At higher settings the tension is great and you can feel the difference at each notch setting to get exactly the workout you want. If you wish to sit then the seat is fully adjustable and can be moved up/down, forward/backward, and even angled to get it just right.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so solid
After a couple of years use by my son and wife, neither of whom are over weight, the right metal pedal post fractured and broke away rendering the machine unusable.
