The York 101 rower is the replacement model for the York R510 Rower. The item fits together out of the box without to much effort. I've had some really good workouts on this. The lowest setting is fairly easy to do - I've worked up to 10 minutes at setting 5 (there are 12) and it's a hard workout. To adjust the settings though you have to get off - you can't really adjust the intensity while you're on it. Overall I'm pleased with the purchase - it fits my frame fine (I'm 5ft 5in).
I'm not fussed on the velcro straps on the feet paddles and the actual foot holders themselves but these are minor complaints. Overall a good rower.

Update Feb 2011. Ok so the strap connected to the hydraulic mechanism has just snapped - looks like it's been wearing away while I've been using the machine - it's completely shredded. Only bought the unit on 20 Jun 2010 and I use it for around 50 minutes a week :(

Fitted the new strap but the wheel at the front of the unit is working its screws loose which then makes a gap for the cord to go into and get stuck (and if you're not careful shredded). Finally managed to get the screws tight enough to stop this happening.

Before you buy this model also read the York 501 comments and you'll see the most common issues with this rower. The components are not meant to for heavy use and as your fitness and stamina increase - so will the problems you'll experience.

If you want something to have a light workout on every now and again this unit is good for that. If you want something you can hammer daily then spend more money (a few hundred quid at least) and get a semi-professional model. There's nothing more annoying than stopping mid workout to sort out the cable snagging or to tighten up screws with allen keys.

This seems like a great rower if you're looking for something to tone up a bit and get back in shape. Easy to assemble, the delivery was really quick (2 or 3 days) and it feels sturdy. There's a bit at the back of the booklet with lots of different ways to use it too, so you can focus on different muscles. Only draw back I could see is that if you are 6 ft tall you might not be able to stretch out fully. I'm only 5ft 8" and its ok for me. Good value for money though.

I've used plenty of different types of home fitness equipment over the last 30 years, but have never bought a rowing machine before, largely due to the general opinion that nothing less than a Concept 2 is any good. Unable to stretch to a Concept 2 I've ignored the benefits that a workout on a rowing machine can give and concentrated on other equipment. This is a shame because having finally decided to risk a 'budget' rower I can see what I have been missing. This had the best reviews of all the budget rowers and it is certainly worth the money. It might not give you the genuine rowing experience of a Concept 2 or a Waterrower, but it does give an excellent workout and is a good addition to any home gym.

It is easy to assemble and seems well built and sturdy. It has a good, smooth action, which is something that many rowers seem to lose points for. The seat moves well and there is no hint of any jerk or catch when you first pull. It's a pleasure to use.

The only negative point that I could see is that the lowest setting is still quite hard work. My (skinny) 16 year old son and my wife both found it quite hard work and it might put a beginner off. For anyone used to exercise, though, it's fine and leaves plenty of scope for improvement. The top setting is very tough indeed, once you get past the first minute or so.

A great rower at a bargain price. I bought it direct from Sweatband, one of Amazon's partner sellers, as it was out of stock with Amazon at the time and the service was excellent.
