with hopefully a trip to new york in the offing shortly my husband bought me this book and certainly the content and the detail has me savouring our visit. the book is written for the complete stranger to the city, starting with a brief but full account of the history of new york, followed by a description of the people of the very cosmopolitan city. this includes details of the city's culture, including museums and theatres etc. with some ideas on how to purchase cheap, or discounted tickets. the rest of the guide is dedicated to describing the different parts of the city, chapter by chapter in great detail with some fantastic pictures. it makes you want to pack your case and get on the first available flight. the last part of the travel pack concentrates on new york city at a glance which encompasses all aspects of your visit, i.e. review of hotels and travel tips etc. with an excellant city map thrown in for the price I feel you simply can't go wrong. perhaps i'll do a different review when i've been and tried and tested the travel pack!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disapointing 31 Dec 2007

I am just back from New York City where I spent 1 week with my partner for xmas. Quickly I realized the book was not helpful at all. You won't find any addresses in this guide. So basically, you will have no idea where the sights or museums mentioned are...You've got the name of the area (lower Manhattan, middle-town), but NY is a huge city and streets could be very long... No restaurants, bars, hotels or clubs recommended either (it has been very hard to find places to eat). In this guide, you will only find a brief description of the main attractions, with some pictures from the 80's.... To be honest I even wonder if the author has already been to New York?
