Book Description

This is the personal story of an outstanding military commander, leading men he did not know into battle. It is also a story of the people of the Israeli Reserve Armored Forces, who inadvertently become heroes in a brutal war. A young armored corps officer is nominated to his first post as commander of an armored brigade in the Israeli Northern Command in 1973, two months prior to the Yom Kippur War. In less than fifteen hours and against all odds, his brigade climbs the Golan Heights to lead a desperate battle against a huge Syrian armored force attacking by surprise on a wide front. Suffering heavy losses, the men manning the outdated Centurion tanks of the 679th Armored Brigade relentlessly fight superior Syrian forces, snatching victory from the brink of defeat, bringing the battle to Syria, forty kilometers from Damascus. This book is about the dramatic and human story of heroism and fear, about camaraderie, about the wounded soldiers escaping from hospitals to go back to their tanks; about the dead and the dying giving strength to the survivors.

A very real account of the central Golan battles.
These men are to be admired, honoured and in our prayers of thanks for the sacrifice they gave.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Detailled Explanation 12 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found that this book was able to throw a lot of light on what was not a detailled explanation of the Yom Kippur war on the Syria front as opposed to the Egyptian front

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a soldiers story. 24 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a soldiers story, who reached General rank. Obviously he fought bravely against overwhelming adversity in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. But he is keen to name all his officers from Lt. upwards and one quickly loses track. That also confused the action, so I was never sure what was going on.
Behind the book is the fact that the author went into politics after retiring from the Army, backed the wrong side in the leadership battle for his party and was ousted. from politics altogether, in some rather underhand politicking by his rivals in the same party.
This book is more about redeeming his reputation, at least as a General.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 6 Dec. 2013
By Rick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The courage and competence displayed by this IDF reserve brigade of tankers is absolutely amazing. General Orr's recollections bring to life a horrific and dangerous time in Israel's proud history. Heroes all. Israel has much to be proud of when in just a few hours with outdated equipment reserve soldiers can be brought to the line and function as they did. Wonderful and vivid writing. Thank you sir.

4.0 out of 5 stars well written, description of the battle mixed with the present reality of the author 26 Nov. 2013
By ProjectValhala - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Starts off with the present dilemma of the author and goes into flashback to the battle. Very effectively done.
To the point description of the author's battle group, it's preparation and challenges. All battle preparation have challenges, the Israeli preparation too had its challenges which are not well known.

But the reader is struck by the Israeli marksmanship. All soldiers face the stress of death and injury in battle, it affects their accuracy, so the one who keeps calm and controls their weapon better has an advantage. The Syrians were taught this lesson the hard way by the Israelis.

For those who are now well aware of modern Israeli social realities, the author'a present day challenges offer an intimate glimpse into the heterogeneous Israeli society and it's inner struggle to accept newcomers, specially the challenge posed by multi-ethnicity.

Well written. Thank you.

Yom Kippur War: These are My Brothers by Ori Orr is a great book about how an outnumbered Israeli armored brigade commander beat a larger Syria force. The book is a personal story for the author and I enjoyed reading it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good history- Atrocious, awkward translation. 15 Dec. 2014
By CBR - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good book for the student of military history, by a courageous leader. It appears to have been originally written in another language and then translated to English. The translator does not know how to "interpret" nor have any understanding of the military and combat.
5.0 out of 5 stars the truth and nothing but the truth 7 Jun. 2014
By Participant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book written by one of Yom Kippur War heroes, described in details the story of a reserved armor brigade which stopped and crashed the Syrian invasion into the Golan. There is no more than the truth in this fascinating book. The author, Ori Or, the 679 Brigade commander succeeded to describe the events as they really happened.
