Matthue is an enigmatic person. I met him briefly at Limmud and was immediately fascinated. At first I wondered whether Matthue was for real. He dresses like someone who's just seen Nirvana (the group) but his long hanging peios, tsit-tsit and straggly beard tell another story. Was this some kind of joke or someone just playing at being "frum"?

I bought Yom Kippur A Go-Go in order to get to know the man a little more and I'm pleased I did. The story of his struggle to reconcile his commitment to orthodox Judaism with his radical social life, and to do it pretty successfully, shows that there is no need for the two worlds to occupy separate universes.

The book is thoughtfully written. Roth has a lovely turn of phrase and writes his narrative in a totally honest way, often touching and funny. What's more, Reading this book taught me much more than just about Matthue's journey as a young man finding his way as an orthodox twenty-something; building a career and trying to deal with the struggle between desire and celibacy. I also learned about the complexities of West Coast sexual politics and how to play basketball in high heels. He really does have some amazing friends!
