Producer Arthur Freed's expensive valentine to inamorata Lucille Bremer - sadly he needed to spend more effort on the songs he wrote lyrics for with composer Harry Warren. The script too is full of bizarre would-be=humour that even Mildred Natwick and Frank Morgan can't make work. But director Minnelli provides an extraordinary visual feast from the red schoolgirl uniforms at the convent, through the Dali-inspired ballet to the climactic fiesta. It's hard to imagine how such a project ever got the green light, let alone the sumptuous budget - this makes 'The Pirate' look restrained! But any Freed unit musical is worth seeing, especially an Astaire one, even though he is not best shown off in this extraordinary fantasy.

Fred Astaire's dancing is first rate, and is mixed with Minnelli's Surrealist vision. There are two big dance numbers, the 'Dream Ballet' and 'Coffee Time'.

'Coffee Time' is danced in 5/4 time which is very rare and in this case very finely done, this number has an end of World War Two feeling about it. The movie was filmed at MGM during 1945.

'The Dream Ballet' is some 15 minutes long and is full of very interesting themes, and must have been very expensive for MGM to film. This piece with Astaire, must have pathed the way for Minnelli's later work with Gene Kelley.

A classic film and all followers of dance and Fred Astire should have a copy

Not the best know of Astaire's films, but he does a fair bit of dancing in it and, is a joy to view.

Simple as that.

Anyone interested in dance in Hollywood musicals should have this. Among other things it has two of the greatest dance sequences ever put on film, with marvellous choreography by Eugene Loring (who worked a lot with American Ballet Theatre at that period). The "Coffee Time" number is a knockout.

Astaire is, as usual, on top form. He has a knack of making the extreme look so easy, but then he was a stickler for the ultimate work ethic and accuracy. His partner here is Lucille Bremer. She is terrific, and matches him step for step in a all the dance work. I admired Rogers very much; and there are two sequences that are way up there with the best. However, I always thought that Rita Hayworth (look at the two movies they made together) was his best partner, and Miss Bremer is as good. There is also the added attraction of the great Mildred Natwick (remember her in Hitchcock's TROUBLE WITH HARRY bakingg blueberry muffins).

A lovely evening's entertainment.
