Product Description

Product Description

In "Yogabody, " author Judith Hanson Lasater writes, "You can't fully understand the dynamic movement of asana without first understanding the basic structure of the human body." Drawing on almost 40 years' experience as a yoga teacher and physical therapist, she focuses here on macroanatomy and kinesiology in relationship to asana practice and teaching. Organized into five parts -- the locomotor system, the vertebral column, the lower extremity, the trunk, and the upper extremity, "Yogabody "covers the body's bones, joints, connective tissue, nerves, and muscles. This valuable guide builds on what yoga teachers already know and enables them to quickly decide what might help their students move with more enjoyment and less difficulty. It helps yoga students understand how their own body functions. Packed with color anatomical drawings, black-and-white diagrammatic asana illustrations, and helpful charts, "Yogabody "is the "Gray's Anatomy" for yoga teachers and students.

Frustrating 13 Jan 2010
By Claire
Format:Paperback
I must say that I am utterly frustrated with this book. I do not have an antomy in background, but I am a yoga enthusiast. I find that body parts are mentioned throughout assuming that the reader knows where they are whilst no previous reference has been made to them. A simple picture would really help showing the major muscles, bones joints etc. I have re-read the first few sections twice now and I am till utterly confused. I honestly spend more time googling the terms used in the book that I do just getting on with the book. It is a most frustrating read. Does not even have an index!

yoga body 22 May 2009
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book. I can sometimes find books on anatomy pretty hard going but Judith has produced a easy to read, enjoyable and practical book. I would highly recommend it.

Typos and Incorrect Information 16 Jan 2010
By MW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was extremely excited to get this book as a gift. I am a student of Yoga for many years and am preparing to go to school for Physical Therapy. The format of the book is fantastic and it has wonderful potential.
Unfortunately, the integrity of the book is seriously undermined by the presence of NUMEROUS typos. By 'NUMEROUS', I don't mean a handful. I mean close to 100. While these are somewhat forgivable, there are unfortunately other instances of information that is simply wrong. Such as a chart saying the Pectoralis Major muscle inserts into the Greater tubercle of the Humerus. It actually inserts into the lateral intertubercular sulcus.
The Rhomboid Major inserts on the medial (or vertebral) border of the scapula. Not the spine of the scapula. And certainly NOT the inferior angle of the scapula as is stated in the book. The Rhomboid Minor also does not insert into the spine of the scapula as stated in the book.
The drawings are generally easy to understand, although there are a few instances of error with insertions and positioning of bone surfaces.
I am no expert on Anatomy, so it was disappointing and frightening for me to see these errors, and then wonder what additional errors may be found in the text that I am not so knowledgeable about.
A book should never make it to the printing press with this many errors and typos.

The Yoga anatomy book I have always longed for! 15 April 2009
By Bethany Peabody - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I received a gorgeous hardcover copy of this book in the mail yesterday. It is the yoga anatomy/physiology book I have always longed for. I like the way she applies the anatomy to the asana. I also found the teaching applications amazing, and I thank her for including those segments. I am a new teacher, and this book is really going to help me. I injured both my knees last week, and I was thrilled to see an entire chapter devoted to the knee joint and leg. Excellent. I forgot to mention how much I love the "Links" section at the end of each chapter. I saw Judith at a seminar last year, and she is such a wellspring of info regarding other books and teachers. The "Links" section is that part of her brain put down in a book. A neat little reference at the end of each chapter. I know I am gushing, but the book truly is amazing. I am going to recommend it to my teacher to have as the anatomy text at her yoga school.

Should be required for all new and old yoga teachers! 14 May 2009
By Shoosh Lettick Crotzer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Judith's books are always outstanding, but this one in particular will become the standard for all yoga teachers and teachers-in-training. Her background as a physical therapist is especially evident by the inclusion of kinesiology, which takes this book to a much higher level than other yoga anatomy books. The clarity of description for each section makes it easy to read and incorporate into practice. The drawings are terrific and the way the book is arranged makes it useful for quick reference. I have been teaching yoga for 35 years and will recommend this book not only to other yoga teachers, but to all students who want to grow deeper into their own practices. It may have taken 20 years for this book to finally be completed, but it was sure worth the wait!
