Product Description

Product Description

Discover simple stretches, poses and massages that will help your flexibility and suppleness, as well as nurture the bond between you and your baby. Yoga is beneficial to everyone and with today's emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, what could be better than carrying out simple yoga exercises with your baby? Here, Francoise Barbira Freedman offers exercises for all stages of early parenthood, from basic postnatal stretches to routines you can do with children up to the age of three. The stretches have been designed to calm the mind and increase alertness, but not put strain on any part of the body. If you already practise yoga, suggestions are offered on adapting classic poses to include your baby. Also included are exercises for special babies with particular combinations of motor skills. The routines aren't just aimed at mothers - fathers and grandparents are encouraged to take part as well, and no previous experience is required.

About the Author

Francoise Barbira Freedman is a trained yoga teacher and therapist, and also a medical anthropologist at Cambridge University. After spending long periods of fieldwork in the Amazon, she was inspired by their gentle approach to parenting to create a programme of nurturing movements for mothers-to-be and new mothers. She also established Birthlight, a charity that has trained over 1500 instructors to teach new parents the benefits of yoga for babies in many countries in Europe and the rest of the world.

A wonderful book!!! 25 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is full of practical advice exercises for mothers and babies. It is a natural evolution from Françoise Barbira Freedman's earlier book on Baby Yoga because it covers all stages of early developement up to the age of 3. Not only does the book have exercises for babies and toddlers but also for mothers which is really fantastic. It is a beautifully illustrated book with nice photos which clearly demonstrate each exercise. It is also very nicely presented from an aesthetic point of view and very easy to use.

A fantastic book- for anyone wondering how they will continue their yoga practice when they have a baby/wanting to continue at home what they have learned in a mum and baby yoga class/ anyone who wants techniques for calming and spending quality time with their little one.
I also have Francoise's first baby yoga book, which i have been using since my little one was a few weeks old. I much prefer this one however as it's loads easier to follow, with really clear pictures that really show the parents and babies having a great time! It seems much simpler to follow , eg it specifices how long your yoga practice should roughly be (although this is totally up to the individual i found it helpful to know what to aim for).
It also covers older babies and toddlers which the older book doesnt; its nice to see what the next stages will be.
Highly recommended.

Thanks to Francoise Freedman and Birthlight for producing this beautiful new Yoga for Mother's and Babies book. It is a joy to read and look at. The book is very inviting, well laid out and easy to read for every stage of a baby's and toddler's development. The book really conveys the joy and lightness of being through the wonderful colours and photography which compliment the information beautifully. Best of all, you don't have to have done any yoga previously to benefit from this book. Francoise makes the information readily available for newcomers and more experienced yoga people alike.

Although I am familiar with yoga for adults, I didn't realise how much there was to Baby Yoga. I looked at going to classes when my baby was young but the class time clashed with her sleeps and then she was on the move early and the courses don't accept crawling bubs so I missed the boat... However this book covers all the options for young babies, those that are on the move, as well as toddlers. It gives practical tips on handling babies, encouraging good movement and breathing through arm, leg and gentle twisting techniques, how to encourage relaxation as well as easy techniques for facilitating babies to crawl (which helps brain development), stand and start to walk so you minimise all the nasty tumbles that they can have. It also includes some great information about baby massage as a natural progression to the movements, holds, breathing and relaxation as well as excellent advice regarding sleep, calming and binding positions. I really like the fact that it also progresses through to include info for moving babies and toddlers so it will help you from 0-3. It also includes advice for postures and relaxation techniques to help Mum's maintain and improve their posture and energy levels and get back in shape in an effective way which includes the babies so it provides the best of both worlds.

I dip in and out of it on a regular basis and learn something new each time. My daughter loves what we do with her baby yoga and the joy is her eyes is so wonderful to observe. I have already recommended the book to a number of friends - I think it would also make a wonderful Christmas or Mother's Day present for any Mum with a babe or toddler.

Yoga for Mother & Baby.
