Thanks to Francoise Freedman and Birthlight for producing this beautiful new Yoga for Mother's and Babies book. It is a joy to read and look at. The book is very inviting, well laid out and easy to read for every stage of a baby's and toddler's development. The book really conveys the joy and lightness of being through the wonderful colours and photography which compliment the information beautifully. Best of all, you don't have to have done any yoga previously to benefit from this book. Francoise makes the information readily available for newcomers and more experienced yoga people alike.
Although I am familiar with yoga for adults, I didn't realise how much there was to Baby Yoga. I looked at going to classes when my baby was young but the class time clashed with her sleeps and then she was on the move early and the courses don't accept crawling bubs so I missed the boat... However this book covers all the options for young babies, those that are on the move, as well as toddlers. It gives practical tips on handling babies, encouraging good movement and breathing through arm, leg and gentle twisting techniques, how to encourage relaxation as well as easy techniques for facilitating babies to crawl (which helps brain development), stand and start to walk so you minimise all the nasty tumbles that they can have. It also includes some great information about baby massage as a natural progression to the movements, holds, breathing and relaxation as well as excellent advice regarding sleep, calming and binding positions. I really like the fact that it also progresses through to include info for moving babies and toddlers so it will help you from 0-3. It also includes advice for postures and relaxation techniques to help Mum's maintain and improve their posture and energy levels and get back in shape in an effective way which includes the babies so it provides the best of both worlds.
I dip in and out of it on a regular basis and learn something new each time. My daughter loves what we do with her baby yoga and the joy is her eyes is so wonderful to observe. I have already recommended the book to a number of friends - I think it would also make a wonderful Christmas or Mother's Day present for any Mum with a babe or toddler.
