"Recommended.  Graduate students and above." - CHOICE, May 2009 Vol. 46 No. 09

Product Description

Today yoga is a thoroughly globalised phenomenon. Yoga has taken the world by storm and is even seeing renewed popularity in India. Both in India and abroad, adults, children and teenagers are practicing yoga in diverse settings; gyms, schools, home, work, yoga studios and temples. The yoga diaspora began well over a hundred years ago and we continue to see new manifestations and uses of Yoga in the modern world.

As the first of its kind this collection draws together cutting edge scholarship in the field, focusing on the theory and practice of yoga in contemporary times. Offering a range of perspectives on yoga's contemporary manifestations, it maps the movement, development and consolidation of yoga in global settings. The collection features some of the most well-known authors within the field and newer voices. The contributions span a number of disciplines in the humanities, including, anthropology, Philosophy, Studies in Religion and Asian studies, offering a range of entry points to the issues involved in the study of the subject. As such, is of use to those involved in academic scholarship, as well as to the growing number of yoga practitioners who seek a deeper account of the origin and significance of the techniques and traditions they are engaging with. It will also-and perhaps most of all-speak to the growing numbers of 'scholar-practitioners' who straddle these two realms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for serious, modern yogi/ni, 21 Jan 2010
By
T. Fraser (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Yoga in the Modern World: Contemporary Perspectives (Routledge Hindu Studies Series) (Hardcover)
This collection of essays contains some of the most thought provoking writing on the topic of modern yoga ever published. Some of the work is potentially unsettling for people who are deeply committed to their asana practice. The essays reveal a variety of truths, semi-truths and downright misconceptions around the subject. Leaves you with the mat pulled from under your feet but also with a capacity to make sense of things about your yoga that have perhaps been a bit hazy up till now. If you are a serious student with an academic bent or a teacher of yoga I think this makes essential reading - however the outrageous price tag will probably put it out of reach for many. Every good library should have one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga in the Modern World - Contemporary Perspectives (Singleton & Byrne), 25 July 2010
Provides a great compilation of insightful and yet provocative perspectives for in-depth understanding of contemporary manifestations of the yoga movement and its connection (or disconnection?!) to authentic Indian traditions. Sets historical background resource, interrogates the interpretation of known ancient texts and questions the development of a perhaps `superficial' physio-culturist expression of yoga in the West. It is a remarkable source of information for yoga teachers and engaged practitioners !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Resource, 17 Jan 2011
By Suburban Yogi - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Yoga in the Modern World: Contemporary Perspectives (Routledge Hindu Studies Series) (Paperback)
This book bridges ancient and modern, academic and experiential yoga beautifully. Each contributor is clearly a dedicated yoga practitioner and writer of the highest calibre. Yoga in the Modern World is an ideal reference for those studying yoga, yoga teachers and anyone with an interest in how this popular art and science is developing in the 21st century. Because the book is so extensively researched and referenced it makes an outstanding reference for further reading.
