Book Description

30 Sep 2002 0865476624 978-0865476622 1st North Point Press Pbk. Ed
There is a yoga boom and Sri K Patabhi Jois is at the heart of it. One of the great yoga figures of our time, Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West a quarter of a century ago and has been the driving force behind its worldwide dissemination. Based on flowing, energetic movement, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it have become the most widespread and influential styles of practice today. Mala means "garland" in Sanskrit, and YOGA MALA - a "garland of yoga practice" is Jois's distillation of Ashtanga. Brought into English by Eddie Stern, a student of Jois's for twelve years and director of the Patanjali Yoga Shala in New York City, YOGA MALA will be an indispensable handbook for students and teachers of yoga for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have! 9 Nov 2007
By Z
Format:Paperback
It's a must-have for anyone who is even slightly interested in Ashtanga yoga! Deatailed explanations of Ashtanga yoga theory (yama, niyama, breathing, etc) and precise description of all Primary series asana including the benefits of each and every asana. The book is written in a very understandable way, so people who don't excell in English will be able to understand it without any trouble.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle formatting ruins a timeless masterpiece. 15 May 2013
By H
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The knowledge is undoubtably preserved in Guruji's own words, but the in the Kindle edtiion received, all photographs have reverted to negatives, which is so disappointing, considering that the Kindle version is almost as expensive as a bound copy.

This needs fixing, and then re-issuing. It's an insult to the author's memory and every buyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly, Highly reccomended 10 May 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is highly reccomended for anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of Yoga as a practice for life. It is unique in its simplicity and depth, and I would encourage everyone to expand their approach to their happiness beyond physical practices, to living a compassionate and soulful life, honouring yourself, others, and all of nature, which I believe was Guruji's true message for all of us.

I would also highly reccomend Donna Fahri's book, "Bringing Yoga to Life," and just about anything that will awaken your to explore your own life path, and become a helpful force in your own communities, starting with yourselves and your families and neighbours first.

May you all be well, and happy, and free of suffering, and share with each other what unites us all.... Kindness!

PS for anyone who doesn't know, Yoga means "spiritual practice!!!" It's universal - it's fruits are universal - loving ourselves, the world, and those around us.
