Product Description

Review

"A treasure . . . Jois's discourses, at once authoritative and devout, [describe] the philosophy of yoga and the spiritual implications of its practice . . . For those who walk the Ashtanga path, this is the real thing." --"Yoga Journal"

Product Description

One of the great yoga figures of our time, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West more than thirty years ago. Based on flowing, energetic movement coordinated with the breath, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it have become the most widespread and influential styles practiced today. "Yoga Mala" - a 'garland of yoga' - is Jois' authoritative guide to Ashtanga. In it, he outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline, explains important terms and concepts, and guides the reader through Ashtanga's Sun Salutations and the subsequent primary sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides. It is a foundational work on yoga by a true master. To coincide with publication of "Guruji: A Portrait of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Through the Eyes of His Students" by Guy Donahaye and Eddie Stern, this new edition of "Yoga Mala" includes a foreword by Jois' grandson Sharath Rangaswamy, currently co-director of the famous school Jois founded in Mysore, the Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

A must-have! 9 Nov 2007
By Z
Format:Paperback
It's a must-have for anyone who is even slightly interested in Ashtanga yoga! Deatailed explanations of Ashtanga yoga theory (yama, niyama, breathing, etc) and precise description of all Primary series asana including the benefits of each and every asana. The book is written in a very understandable way, so people who don't excell in English will be able to understand it without any trouble.

This book is highly reccomended for anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of Yoga as a practice for life. It is unique in its simplicity and depth, and I would encourage everyone to expand their approach to their happiness beyond physical practices, to living a compassionate and soulful life, honouring yourself, others, and all of nature, which I believe was Guruji's true message for all of us.

I would also highly reccomend Donna Fahri's book, "Bringing Yoga to Life," and just about anything that will awaken your to explore your own life path, and become a helpful force in your own communities, starting with yourselves and your families and neighbours first.

May you all be well, and happy, and free of suffering, and share with each other what unites us all.... Kindness!

PS for anyone who doesn't know, Yoga means "spiritual practice!!!" It's universal - it's fruits are universal - loving ourselves, the world, and those around us.
