As a doctor and life-long yoga practitioner, I am very impressed by the wide range of knowledge and substantive information provided by the authors in Yoga For Dummies. I always thought the "Dummies" were just that...something for novices and people who needed basic instruction. But, in bringing together two of the most credible teachers that have ever taught yoga in the West, Larry Payne (founding president of the International Association of Yoga Therapist) and Georg Feuerstein (author of more than 40 books), this book offers something for all levels of yoga practitioners that you can't find anywhere else in one book. The new-to-yoga people will find that there is a lot of info on the background and philosophy of yoga provided by Dr. Feuerstein along with sequences that are specifically designed for beginners - complete with both what "to do" and the ever important what "not to do" when performing the poses. For those who have experience in yoga, Dr. Payne shares some fabulous dynamic yoga asana sequences that are directly from India in the lineage of T. Krishnamacharya, who was the teacher of B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattahbi Jois, T.K.V. Desikachar and Indra Devi among millions of others. His routines are authentic, challenging, sensible and healthy for your body when performed in coordination with his precise directions, which are clearly laid out in the book.
All in all, whether you are new to yoga or even a yoga teacher, I think this is one of the best yoga books you can buy!! For under 20 bucks this book is a steal and can provide you with a lot of great information in the philosophy, art and practice of yoga!
