4.0 out of 5 stars Good for new and old. 17 Oct. 2013

Great book for beginners, but also for those who need to remind themselves of the different positions. The different sequences mean that I can slowly strengthen and increase flexibility. It's been years since I last did Yoga and I hadn't realised how stiff I had become. With just a few sessions (without forcing poses) I can already feel the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Beginning Yoga Students!! 13 April 2012
By M. Sims - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I was very impressed by Yoga for Beginners: A Quick-Start Guide To Practicing Yoga For New Students. The author, Timothy Burgin, provides a fresh and accessible approach to guiding new yogis into a practice. His extensive knowledge and expertise in the history, philosophy and practice of yoga are evident and essential, but what I found most impressive was that he presents the information in a way that is particularly meaningful and easy to understand for beginning yoga students.
He first leads you through an explanation of the origins of yoga and guidelines for practicing, then he breaks down the basics of pranayama and meditation. Most of the book is dedicated to understanding the asanas/physical postures, how to practice them safely and correctly, and sequences to use. He provides detailed step-by-step instruction, including variations of and contraindications for each pose. The pages are accentuated with beautiful pictures demonstrating each pose which I found very helpful. Yoga can often be intimidating for many to start, and while a book cannot replace the valuable personal instruction and assistance that a knowledgeable teacher can provide, Yoga for Beginners is one of the best resources I've seen that breaks down the essentials of yoga in a way that leaves you feeling confident and ready to begin your practice.

I printed the summary photo pages from my Kindle version with a screen capture and made notes on them so I could look at them while doing yoga. The explanations in the book are great with each step having a picture.

I love the warm up sequence.

Short and sweet but filled with lots of useful information but not overpowering for the novice.

For the price this is a gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction 2 Mar. 2014

I downloaded three books about yoga for reading on the Kindle. This one was definitely the best. The topic is clearly explained with good step-by-step illustrations for the poses, followded by a summary of each step (all pictures together on the page) so you don't have to worry about turning pages while practising/learning. Breathing is also explained. For each pose and sequence the benefits as well as possible pain points for injuries are listed.
