Format: Audio CD
Dion is one of my all-time favorite “oldies” singers, and his efforts of more recent years (such as this 1989 album), though different from his old doo-wop days, are no less impressive. His voice has mellowed over the years, but the passion is still there, as is the old Dion swagger. King of the New York Streets is a bold and brassy musical expose, while Yo Frankie is another song seasoned by a bold sound. I’ve Got to Get to You and Loving You is Killing Me are somewhat formulaic, but Dion’s great lyrics make them quite enjoyable and catchy. Always in the Rain and Tower of Love are softer tunes, really showcasing Dion’s great vocals. Slow and sentimental characterizes the final track Serenade, which is really a beautiful song with touching, poetic lyrics. And the Night Stood Still and Always in the Rain are two of the best songs to be found here, infused with a steady beat that suits Dion’s voice well, but the truly incredible song on this album is Written on the Subway Wall/Little Star. I feel that this song is as good as many of the old classics from Dion and the Belmonts, and the Little Star bridge creates a direct temporal link between the old days and the new.
Although I am too young to have heard Dion in his youthful prime, I have been a fan of his for many years now, and this album really made me wax nostalgic. Dion’s lyrics contain traces of his own life’s story and musical soul, and that gives them the type of power that few singers can boast of. It is important to make note of the talent that came together to produce this album, making evident how respected a singer Dion remains by others in the music industry. Bryan Adams, K.D.

This is a superb rock and roll album, crafted by that old master of the genre Dion DiMucci. This man really knows how to put together a song - and really put some passion into it. More than 10 years after its release this album is still fresh and very easy to listen to. If you want an antidote to the heartless drivel that today's so-called "artists" release and really want to re-live the rock and roll years, when to rock also meant to swing then I heartily recommend this album - treat yourself to this 'forgotten" gem of an album from a truly superb singer/songwriter.

I had this as a new plastic album in 1989.. it was superb. Somewhere in between a number of house moves.. it went missing.
I have checked second-hand stores for ages but never found a copy.. or a replacement CD. Was I the only person in the UK interested in this..?
And, then, whilst checking Amazon for the recording. a notice that the CD would be re-issued..! Deep joy. On the issue date I duly ordered my copy and it's been played to death ever since. I've now found an original video on Youtube, released by the record company at the time.. of a track called "And the night stood still" Magic.. try it. Film quality is a bit iffy, but the music's sound..[sorry!]
We all have albums' where the good are mixed with average.. not here.. I would say that the whole album is of real quality and.. the cast of players.. where to start. All in all.. simply MAGNIFICENT and at todays prices.. a bargain.

I'd had this on tape for years, but hadn't listened to it in ages. I wanted to put in on my MP3 player so ended up having to buy a CD. When CD arrived I played it and all I can say is......Wow!.......I'd forgotten how good it was. I was dancing(which I can't)around the room, singing(which I can't)at the top of my voice and was in tears. It's a real rollercoaster of emotions sung with such beautiful vocals. If you haven't heard this in ages, buy it. If you haven't heard this Dion CD before, buy it. If you haven't heard Dion before, buy it, you're in for a real treat.

A friend lent me a cassette of this ages ago. All i knew was "The Wanderer" which i don't like. What a great artist and voice. He is revered by his peers and you can hear Dave Edmunds in the production.I am a great fan of the drummer Terry Williams and he is doing his stuff on this album as you'd expect. What can I say? Good songs, great sound and a great voice. What was I doing when this came out? this album is quite hard to find but a gem!

I still have my original LP that I bought in 1989, I had forgotten how good this album is.Great songs, great vocal performance and great musicians. This guy had his first hits 30years before this album came out and one listen will tell you he has still got it. He is best known for songs like Runaround Sue and the Wanderer songs that have stood the test of time as they still get airplay on the oldies station. He has matured and this album is as good as any of his early stuff, one listen and you will love it, now the cd is out I will be upgrading. GIVE THIS A LISTEN YOU WILL WANT A COPY

Although Dion may have been out of the public eye for a bit in the 1970s and early 1980s, he was still writing, performing, and recording great music, much of which has now been reissued. This disc, however, was a return to form in terms of popularity as well as style (He had dabbled in blues and other genres), being a mainstream pop album, with hints of his doo-wop rock 'n' rollery of years gone by.

The album features a collection of ten new songs, all written or co-written by Dion, and collaborations with many big names. Most notable (and audible) of these is Dave Edmunds, who produced the album. His trademark rhythm sounds blend well with Dion's soaring melodies and style, and his guitar brings a new vitality to the recordings.

Paul Simon guests on 'Written On The Subway Wall/Little Star', using his beautiful voice in a refrain. This also emphasises the contrast between his voice and Dion's, allowing Dion to be more masculine and strident without ever losing his tone.

There is also a track "Drive All Night" produced by, and featuring the vocal and guitar talents of Bryan Adams. This is as good as any of the other tracks on the album, although it is a little out of place with the style of the remainder.

The standout track for me is the opening one; "King Of The New York Streets"; a great driving song, in which Dion sings about his life before and in the opening years of his fame.

This is a terrific album, and if you like Dion, or Dave Edmunds, you will not be disappointed.
