A lot of people laugh when they first hear Daniel Johnston or are appalled by if they stopped and looked at a list of his musician fans including David Bowie, Nirvana, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips, Teenage Fanclub, Bmx Bandits, Sparklehorse, Beck, Mercury Rev, Pearl Jam, Spiritualized, The Pastels and Death Cab For Cutie they might just think well there must be something here. There is something here, something special, probably the greatest songwriting talent of the last 25 years.
I first became aware of the name Daniel Johnston through cover versions of his songs by some of my favourite bands The Pastels, Half Japanese and BMX Bandits and then Kurt wore a Daniel Johnston T shirt and I had to find the originals. It was a culture shock finding little white home recorded cassette tapes with photocopied stuck on cover featuring Daniel's own childlike sppoky drawings. The first cassette I listened to, because it had a couple a titles I recognised on it, was Yip! Jump Music. My first reaction was "is this tape faulty" then the first track started and I couldn't believe the sound quality or the primitive nature of the performance I was hearing. Daniel thumping his organ's keys was louder than the nchords it was playing and his voice wasn't exactly conventional either. I stuck with it and by track 4 Speeding Motorcyle I was won over forever.
I really think for some people of my generation this was a similar experience to those stories we hear of from people about when they heard Elvis for the first time. They had never heard anything like it before. Well this is rawer than early Elvis and Daniel wrote these songs. Museum of Love, Rocket Ship, I Live For Love and Speeding Motorcycle could be multi-million selling pop hits if covered by the right acts. The a capella King Kong is something else, a totally sincere, emotional blow by blow retelling of the tragic love story of Kong.
In a world where it's so rare to find anything real it's good to know their are artists like Daniel Johnston out there. He is clearly troubled but thank goodness other musicians spotted his talent and decided to support his unique talent. The world needs Daniel Johnston.
