Product Description

Product Description

BIS is proud to present a new disc from star pianist Yevgeny Sudbin who here combines works by Liszt, Ravel and Saint-Saëns under the themes of Love, Delirium and Death.

Funérailles is Liszts elegy for his Hungarian countrymen who died in the 1849 uprising against Habsburg Rule. Death also appears in Ravels depiction of a hanging Le Gibet (The Gallows) from Gaspard de la Nuit and closes the programme in Saint-Saëns Danse macabre.

Love is present in the Petrarch Sonnets originally song settings of poems in which Petrarch immortalises, the object of his unrequited passion and Ravels Ondine the tale of a water nymph tempting a mortal to join her in the depths of the lake.

Delirium is present throughout the disc, especially during the nightmarish portrait of the goblin Scarbo.

Yevgeny Sudbin has received considerable critical acclaim for his recordings on BIS. His disc of music by Scriabin was described in BBC Music Magazine as being as terrifyingly changeable and emotionally all-engulfing as the music itself.

Review

'Sudbin is a pianist of prodigious gifts. Among the most striking is the astonishing beauty of his sound at the instrument, as limpid and pure as water from a mountain spring. This quality is nowhere better showcased than in the formidable 'Gaspard de la nuit', long recognised as Ravel s most pianistically challenging creation.' --International Record Review, January 2013

'Sudbin's own arrangement via Liszt and Horowitz of Saint-Saëns's Danse macabre, another tour de force conjuring once more a young pianist released from all inhibition, going his own way with dazzling imaginative resource...This is a record I shall return to for an ever-renewed sense of wonder and fascination.' --Gramophone, February 2013, Bryce Morrison

'His Liszt is remarkable [Yevgeny Sudbin]. The F minor Transcendental Study's brand of miraculous virtuosity, at once tumultuous and limpid, is marvelously captured...Plus points include superb recorded sound throughout, and BIS's inclusion of the relevant text.' ***** --BBC Music Magazine, February 2013, Malcolm Hayes

'The build up of tension is awesome in Sudbin's performance, his relaxation into the music's more reflective lyricism beautifully realised, Liszt's terror stricken virtuosity at the climax fearsome in its power...This is a truly great disc, inspired and inspiring.' --The Daily Telegraph, Geoffrey Norris

Each time I buy a Sudbin recording, I end up wishing it was the beginning of a 'Complete works of...'. His Scarlatti sonatas are the most magical piano versions I've ever heard, and one disc is a tantalising taster, leaving me wanting much more (even at full price, I'd probably invest in a 30-disc box set). With this disc, I now feel the need for Sudbin's view of the rest of Liszt's Transcendental Studies too. There's a freshness, a clarity of vision, and a vigour, which befit a young pianist, but without exaggeration or indulgence. Maturity but with no hint of boredom in familar repertoire.

As usual with BIS, the recording quality manages to be precise and analytical, while projecting a warmth, a full-bodied piano sound, and a pleasing acoustic. Concentrate, and you can admire the fine detail and even the pedalling; relax and the music sweeps all before it and you forget the passage of time.

It's also worth mentioning the accompanying booklet. There's a detailed 8-page essay by Sudbin himself, full of new insights, witty without being arch, and genuinely enhancing the listening experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic playing! 27 April 2014

I was first alerted to Sudbin when I heard his Scriabin disc. The playing here is no less impressive, in a programme that has some commonality with the Scriabin disc - a penchant for the 'fantastic' and 'delirious'. Beautifully recorded too - great piano sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb 29 Aug 2013

It's not often one hears performances that truly re-create the music. Sudbin's astounding virtuosity, coupled with vivid imagination, create Liszt performances that surpass anything I have heard before, even the wonderful recording by Volodos. His own programme notes are also very revealing, both of the artist and the music. Clearly an intellectual as well as a virtuoso. Top quality recording too

His individuality is at the heart of this recording. I have played many of these pieces featuring other great pianists but this has the X factor.
