Amazon.co.uk Review
Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn's superb sitcom Yes, Prime Minister entered 10 Downing Street with Jim Hacker now Prime Minister of Britain, following a campaign to "Save the British Sausage". Whether tackling defence ("The Grand Design"), local government ("Power to the People") or the National Education Service, all of Jim Hacker's bold plans for reform generally come to nothing, thanks to the machinations of Nigel Hawthorne's complacent Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey (Jeeves to Hacker's Wooster) who opposes any action of any sort on the part of the PM altogether. This is usually achieved by discreet horse-trading. In "One of Us", for instance, Hacker relents from implementing defence cuts when he is presented with the embarrassingly large bill he ran up in a vote-catching mission to rescue a stray dog on an army firing range. Only in "The Tangled Web", the final episode of Series 2, does the PM at last turn the tables on Sir Humphrey. Paul Eddington is a joy as Hacker, whether in mock-Churchillian mode or visibly cowering whenever he is congratulated on a "courageous" idea. Jay and Lynn's script, meanwhile, is a dazzlingly Byzantine exercise in wordplay, wittily reflecting the verbiage-to-substance ratio of politics. Ironically, Yes, Prime Minister is an accurate depiction of practically all political eras except its own, the 1980s, when Thatcher successfully carried out a radical programme regardless of harrumphing senior civil servants. --David Stubbs

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage political satire, 15 April 2006
By this point, the writers Jay and Lynn had concocted a well oiled comedy machine, and the move to number 10 added a new dimension to an already classic sitcom. Eddington, Hawthorne and Fowlds had now perfected their respective roles to a tee, delivering a masterclass of comic timing and making it a joy to watch from first to last. But, the point of interest is again Hackers progession from desperate, inexperienced minister into relatively experienced PM, on a much more equal footing with Sir Humphrey which provides some of the series' best moments. This is evident in 'The Key' in which Hacker pulls the strings, running the usually unflappable Humphrey ragged for the entire episode. Highly recommended, and rightly a national institution in the 1980's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exellent series, flawed DVD, 27 Oct 2004
This is one of the funniest series in the BBC catalogue. However, this double sided DVD release is let down by poor picture (especially in comparison to the earlier Yes Minister DVDs) and sound. The quality of the comedy is enough to make the DVD more than worthwhile, but the drawbacks in picture and sound are annoying and at times intrusive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, 14 Mar 2004
By Falcon42 (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
Completing the on-screen escapades of Sir Humphrey Appleby and James Hacker MP (now PM), this set dovetales with the preceding "Yes Minister" series. Perhaps reflecting the longevity of the series, the quality of material is somewhat less than the original series, though still of excellent standard; exploiting to the max the conflicts and tensions arising between a layman appointed to a position of authority and the wily head of his administration, responsible for 'advising' and enacting his policies.
Essential viewing for anyone woring in a managerial/administrative/political context, this parody on real life administrative machinations can almost be too close to the truth for comfort!
In the words of the skilled producers, these programmes' focus not so much on the political aspects of the scenario, but far more on the intricacies of administration and the British Civil Service more generally.
That said, the principles demonstrated are easily transferable to many alternative contexts, and on occasion I've even found the words of Sir Humprey leaping to my lips when work has almost demanded such! Experience tells me that much of the humourous context of this programme is merely a slight heightening of real life issues; and those who have the onerous task of championing change within established organisations will quickly develop an empathy with the erstwhile PM Hacker, learn much for him and 'Humpy' and smile greatly.
Contrasting with Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister enabled the script writers to take the comedy into broader areas and develop some of the themes and thinking behind the whole Yes Prime/Minister canon.
An essential acquisition for those who already have the three Yes Minister series; I would recommend those new to the show to get the preceding trilogy first, to better understand the reasons for Hacker's restrained outlook on life and his progressive development with time and experience.
Near the pinnacle of British comedy, the Yes Prime/Minister series may be considered to be the finest political comedy to date.
